    Bowing tool for beginners...

Does anyone know the name of the tool that clip on the bottom of the fingerboard to stop from bowing near the finger board? It's a tool for a beginner.

Double Bass Are Spiros overrated for bowing?

I definitely agree with you. I put a set of spiros on my other bass (a much cheaper bass) and they sound great!! My more expensive bass seem to have the scratchy sound. But since my last post I've changed the rosin, and the problem is solved. It makes a world of difference now.

Double Bass Are Spiros overrated for bowing?

I hear folks swear by these strings. I actually have them on my bass, and they're all I know. That's why I'm asking. Also I'm very new to the bass. Here's the problem (and this could be operator problem) They tend to have a scratchy sound and less attack when bowing at a faster speed, Especially...

Double Bass What's the best rosin to use?

Yeah I'm with you on the arm wait. Had a convo with my instructor a few hour ago and she basically told me the same thing. I think it's a combination of things. I definitely want to chair the bow hair to something more coarse. I dunno, I'll figure it out one way or another

Double Bass What's the best rosin to use?

Also I think you're right about the hair. I've been reading up on the Spiros producing a "Scratchy" sound under the bow. I'm going to try something more coarse than what I currently have. We'll see what happens

Double Bass What's the best rosin to use?

Maybe it is me then. The double bass is such a moody instrument though. I'm really passionate of learning this instrument I swear, but there's a ton of challenges. I've been using the carbon I love it's response. I just wish there was less tension on the strings then I wouldn't have that...

Double Bass What's the best rosin to use?

When you say "noisy" are you talking about how much pops makes the strings vibrate or a "scratchy" sound? I've had pops but my teacher told me to throw it away so I did, but from what I can remember it was very sticky. I see that I'm going to have to try a variety of rosins before I stick with...

Double Bass What's the best rosin to use?

I'm still kinda new to the bass and now learning the pros and cons of my instrument. My teacher says to only use Carlson's Rosin because our climate is similar to Sweden, and Pops rosin is just too sticky for the northeast climate. I'm starting to think that the Carlson's rosin isn't sticky...

    Eduard Tubin Double Bass Concerto

Ok So I'm really new to the bass but learning very quick. I admire Tubin's double bass concerto that I had to find this piece of music. The problem is that it's written for orchestral strings and not solo tuning, and is an octave lower than what I hear in videos of other people playing it. The...

    Question about the bridge

Oh thanks for that. but does it also somehow affect playability?

    Question about the bridge

Very new to the double bass, but I wanted to ask why is it so important to lubricate the groves in the bridge before changing string, and how this affects the playing?

    OMG!!!OMG!!OMG!!

I figured this would capture someone's curiosity. Here's the thing, I'm in need of strings. Here's what I like: Thomastik-Infeld Spirocore 3871 1/2+Size Solo Tuning. However they seem impossible to find in stock for my 1/2 size bass. So I would love to but something comparable. Any thoughts?

    problem playing high notes

Aww Man!! thanks for this. the action is exactly 1/4 in away from the fingerboard. I think the problem is that the strings don't vibrate enough when playing that high. i'm also going to try using some solo strings and tune to eadg. i can imagine with less tension the playability will be much...
