    Yamaha BX-1 and BX-5 basses

Hey! I've refinished my BX-1 with tung oil. It is a 1990 Taiwan model. I like it more than the black lacquer look!

    Yamaha BX-1 and BX-5 basses

Apparently I am incorrect. My Taiwan BX-1 does indeed have a 5 piece neck! The backside appears to have a solid block behind the neck which I assume is for the tilt of the neck in relation to the body. These basses are really a steal on the used market. I only removed a small patch of the...

    Yamaha BX-1 and BX-5 basses

So I've just discovered that my 1990 made in Taiwan BX-1 doesn't have the nice 5 piece neck. It has a single piece. I've just started stripping the finish, and I'm wondering what other surprises are waiting for me. Kinda a bummer, but still a nice bass.

    P-Bass build

I refinished my 24 year old Epiphone Les Paul Special II recently and did the neck with a coat of Tung Oil, sanded it and then applied two more coats. I like to feel the wood on the neck. The body is a sloppy glitter acrylic.

    P-Bass build

So I've "finished" the P-Bass. At least until I get the itch to modify it again. I moved the Chromes to another bass and I put on LaBella flats. So smooooooth! And wow those pickups are hot! Anyhow, the photos: And more photos:

    P-Bass build

Alright. The weather has improved and I've been able to resume work. I've got at least 10 coats of lacquer on, and I've gone over it with a 000 steel wool, as well as a polish compound. It's not the mirror finish I was going for, but it looks nice. I probably should go over it with a 800...

    Yamaha BX-1 and BX-5 basses

I thought I read somewhere that someone replaced the tuning blocks by requesting them from Steinberger. Might be dust in my brain too! Now I'm curious to see what the neck pickup looks like under the hood, which is just about all I ever use. They do have different color wiring. I've been...

    Yamaha BX-1 and BX-5 basses

Anyone out there still playing a BX-1 or BX-5? There's not a ton of info out there on them out there since they're not real popular. Personally I've been really impressed by mine which I've had for a few months now. I liked it because it is lightweight, headless, and not real bulky so it's...

    School me on Alembic

I currently own a '95 Epic, which is regarded as the "low end" Alembic. It is the best bass I've ever owned, but more on why later. If you want to hear what it sounds like check out the RHCP One Hot Minute album where Flea used it on many of the tracks. And I understand why. It is a great...

    Tube 300w vs Solid-state 300w?

So 300 tube watts is, from my experience, the power output at the disclosed distortion specification. You can push it past that, a lot, but distortion and compression gradually increases. An Ampeg 300w bass head I'd expect would be difficult for one person to carry, costs a mint, and could...

    Would You Make This Trade?

I have an Alembic Epic, and two other basses. Sometimes I think, "Oh I should sell it and get something else" but then I take it out and I realize the Alembic is nearly perfect compared to my other basses. It's a keeper, and I'd be better off just saving up for another bass. Mine has the same...

    P-Bass build

Oh I should mention that the bridge is a wee bit crooked. It doesn't seem to affect the sound or playability, but I do want to fix that. So once I disassemble the whole thing, I'll need to plug/glue the holes except for the one corner which I'll use as an anchor. I'm going to drill the holes...

    Entwistle PBXN pickup review

I've had the pickups on for over a month and a half now, and I think these pickups sound GREAT. With the D'Addario Chromes I can get a bit of a growl. Lots of punch and super strong output. I can dial down the tone (0.047uf) and get a fairly vintage tone. I like this bass more than my other...

    P-Bass build

Thanks for asking. I've been holding off posting until I've made more progress on the finish, which is on hold due to the cold weather. Not sure if the custom art will happen either. I was just thinking about this today. I should disassemble it to be ready for any surprise warm weather that...

I like the chicken head knob!
