Four piece rock band here, playing small/medium size bars. We use (2) EV ZLX12 powered speakers, primarily for vocals, with a bit of guitar and bass mixed in. Power is 1000 watts, I assume that's peak power. They do the job, they're easy to haul and have been reliable.

I've learned to not over think these things. Do the audition with an open mind, cross those other bridges if and when you get there.

'Been there, I wouldn't like it either - this sorta stuff has no place on your band's page. Just gotta have that discussion with him. Pick the right time and place, stay cool and diplomatic, I'd like to think he'll understand. It worked for me anyway.

This. I've had seemingly perfect situations fail. As long as a few pre-requisites are met (convenient rehearsal spot, enthusiasm, gigs on the radar, good drummer, appealing singer) I'll give it a try and see if it flies.

I watched a YT video of Aguilar heads being assembled at the shop in NYC. Pickups too if I recall. But this was several years ago. I don't know about the cabs and speakers.

I'm with ya here.... Gig attire: There's a scene in "The Commitments" movie that addressed this perfectly. "You play better in your suit". I agree. You're in a band, on a stage, it's a special thing, people are looking at you, you're allowed to be a rock star....dress accordingly. Band...

Did original power pop for most of the 90's. Not sure why really, just sorta fell into it. I handled the bass but no writing otherwise. Was a tough gig for all the familiar reasons but overall a great experience with some memorable moments - including two gigs at CBGB's! I'm proud of this work...

I bought a stock '72 Precision fixer-upper circa '90 and added a Jazz pickup along with the other repairs needed. It was the trend among us hot rodders at the time. This is still my #1 today. The J pickup comes in handy here or there but usually it's off, the P pickup alone does what I need...

Weekend cover band here. Yes, plug and play. Bass - cord - amp. I get the sound we need with very little fuss. A few tweaks along the way as needed, otherwise no need or desire to make big tonal changes.

Weekend cover band here. I bring a second bass, spare cables, etc., even a spare amp head that stays in the car. Yeah - a bit much - but I don't wanna be the party pooper. Haven't needed any of it in many years but....

Working with a bad drummer is lousy, it's unfortunate your BL doesn't see this. I'd do the NYE gig then decide. I doubt you'll change the BL's mind, leaving you w/a tough decision. Weigh the pros and cons, consider other opportunities. Follow your heart and gut.

No stands, books or devices in our cover band please. Maybe an inconspicuous cheat sheet here or there for when a little nudge is needed, otherwise do the work, learn the material, be prepared.

Good responses here. I agree - quality over quantity. Space is ok. Strong vocals go a long way. Tightness, energy, good tone and clear sound counts. I'm in a 3 piece cover band - guitar, bass and drums - all solid players - with a strong female lead singer - yes there's empty spots but the above...
