At least active EMG pickups have a preamp per every (low impedance for more treble) coil in pickup. Then signals are trimmed, summed and boosted using internal electronics; so basically yes - it's the preamp(s) being build into the pickup housing.

Using pick there are some extra trebles to get from worn strings. It's useful to relax right hand's fingers too.

What about convenience? There are amps which combine many function (DI, tuner, comp, preset switching) so one can setup much quicker. I like my Shuttle+Neox very much but if can get by using pedal preamp straight into a mixer I will. That's why I'm drooling TC heads because they seem to be one...

I like presets filters on Shuttle6 in "SIGNAL SHAPE" section. Especially L.F. boost and MID-scoop as bigger changes in tone character are just button away. To get best of Shuttle's tube preamp I've to use a booster pedal (a compressor in my case) thought. Then it can overdrive much further. :)
