Could use some help/advice on fretless bass pickup and electronics

I think the first thing you should do is change the pickup from parallel to series. Even better if you can get a switch or push-pull to change between the two while you're playing. All three of my basses have series/parallel switches and I find them very useful, you might too. What resistance...

    Markings for fretless

I like the partial sidelines and dots that I have on my Maruszczyk. They call 'em "mini ghost lines" on their configurator, but I call 'em "cheater lines"

Best Class D Head to use just as a power amp?

GR Bass One800 at 5.18lbs. It has a switch to bypass the preamp, so you can use its preamp only when you need it. Or you can get their Pure Amp 800 to skip the preamp entirely and to get under 5lbs.

    Flats and various basses

I recorded my G&L Tribute L-2500 with 4 different sets of flats and uploaded them here: Please excuse my sloppy playing as I was recording a lot of tracks. The strings I used were: Year-old Ernie Ball Cobalt Flats Year-old D'addario Chromes Two years old but barely used LaBella Deep Talkin'...

    Getting my 2nd Bass

Nut width of your Yamaha BB735 is 43mm. Nut width of the Ray35 is 45mm. Nut width of the Sadowsky Jazz is 48mm. String spacing of the Yamaha BB735 and Sadowsky is around 18mm. String spacing of the Ray35 is 17.5mm. The Sadowsky will feel significantly wider in your hands. See if you can go...

    G&L Club Part 7

You could try swapping the pots from 250K to 500K if a string change doesn't brighten up your tone enough.

Who could build me a short-scale 5 string bass?

Maruszczyk for sure. The two singlecut body shapes (Sputnik and Paddock) are only offered down to 32" scale. You can always email and ask if they'll do 31" or 30" scale on those body shapes. Or you could go with one of the other body shapes that has 30" as an available options. Lots of...

Would you trust and buy a bass you've never tried before?

Yes, I bought my G&L Tribute L-2500 without ever playing one. Luckily, it matched the ergonomics and feel of my Ray35 pretty much identically, so there was no adjustment period at all (except for its electronics). Then, knowing that those dimensions felt good to me, I ordered a custom from...

Show me your compact pedalboard setup

Is this compact enough? I think I've got room for another pedal or two

Is there are “Never owned a Fender” club?

Never owned a FMIC bass, but my first electric guitar was a Squier Strat. I do have a Sterling by Musicman Ray35 and a G&L Tribute L-2500 -- do those count as FSOs? I probably won't ever get a Fender because the 1 7/8in (48mm) nuts on most FMIC 5-stringers are uncomfortably wide for me.

    I am a Luddite/Boomer/Caveman

That was my first amp too. I hated the notch control because I couldn't turn it off. I wound up plugging directly into the effects return most of the time, but you lose volume control that way. It was also an awkward carry and heavier than I wanted.

    G&L Club Part 7

Right, except the series/parallel switch is different for the L-1000. It's parallel/split/OMG.

Who to build an ultra - wide fretted 5-string?

Maruszczyk checks all of your boxes except for nut width -- the widest they offer on a 5-string is 48mm. Their 6 string models do come with 54mm nuts, so it might be worth an email to see if they'll accommodate you. https://www.public-peace-customshop.de/basses

    Jazz bass with PJ pickups?

If you're not opposed to active electronics and a reverse-P, the Charvel Pro-Mod San Dimas PJ could be an option. And it's an FMIC brand too!
