    Why play a four string?

Because it's a cover tune. As such, one hopes to emulate the original artist(s) as close as possible. Courage/different/innovation are topics that don't generally apply to cover tunes... unless your revamping the original tune to your own style.

    Why play a four string?

My problem with (most) 5-string 'cover tune' performers is when they play low notes on the B-string that aren't on the original recordings. I know those original recordings didn't go that low in the sonic register (there were no 5-string bass guitars back then), so why are they doing it? It just...

Is a drum machine really necessary to learn bass?

No. One does not NEED a drum machine (or drummer) to learn bass. Playing along with recordings works better. However, a drum machine/metronome would be desirable to better ones sense of meter while practicing exercises (i.e. scales, patterns, segments from songs, etc).

screw-on (bolt-on) neck vs. neck-through, can you hear the difference?

My experience has been this; Bolt-on necks have less fundamental/more overtones (which I prefer for live performance). Neck-through have more fundamental/less overtones (which I prefer for recording). Not that EQ can't address these differences, but just a general guideline. With bolt-on necks...

    The Joy Of Maple Fretboards

I have chosen maple with black dot inlay on my Fender bass, mostly because of the contrast when performing on stage I can see my position. Sometimes under certain conditions the lighting allows for the pearl inlay on rosewood boards to blend together... same for side markers. I like the...

Are 5 strings on the way out?

However, most music utilizing a lower B-string is NOT using the upper range, so one isn't necessarily "giving up" the high notes. And I'm not too crazy when bassist "rearrange" a song to utilize a low B-string when the original recordings didn't have a 5-string bass.

Are 5 strings on the way out?

Could be proving the point... more 5-strings on the wall means nobody buying them.

    NBD: 1977 Ibanez 2404

Just acquired a 2404 (early variant). What scale bass strings work best? Although listed as a short scale neck, I have found that some short scale bass necks (Guild Starfire, Beatle basses) work better with medium scale strings... a more proper string wrap taper at the pegs and a bit less tension.

why does my bass resonate when not being used.

I've had this happen twice before. Back in the 70's, my bass was plugged into an amp (turned on) but I laid it on my bed while I did some other chore. For some unknown reason, one string began to resonate and increased to the point the string buzzed and it went null! It would keep repeating this...

    Flats - Do I need to man-up?

Forget the flats! Use compressed round wound (GHS and Ken Smith offer the best range of gauges, lengths, etc). or a ground round wound (GHS Brite Flats and D'Addario Half Rounds). Compressed feel and play like normal round wounds but without the finger noise... ground feel and play more like...

what basses haven't worked out for you... and why?

Long scale acoustic bass and long scale EB-3L... both axes put the nut (and my left hand) WAY out there making any stand-up performance a real chore. Double-neck (6-string guitar/4-string bass) with the guitar neck on the lower position makes for really tough barre chord!
