I have owned several Devons all with different pickups and pickup placement. They were all fantastic but by far my favourite had the pickups in the "modern" position ala Sadowsky Modern or Ken Smith.

The neck pickup is closer to the fretboard than a normal J but the 24 frets als plays a part visually. also plays a part. The original owner requested the neck pickup that way I believe. It sounds great.
