P-Bass love - is it more of a boomer thing?

I’m 35, been playing bass for 10 years. I’ve had mostly basses with active EQ and dual humbuckers. I got my first Fender this year, however it’s an MIJ boxer bass, which is a PJ. The split coil pickup doesn’t really sound like a classic P bass, but it’s in the neighborhood. I would love to...

Why do so many players love flats?

I bought a used Squier J bass from Guitar Center that had flats, most likely installed by the previous owner. I loved the feel of them, and the tone was great. But I’m in a cover band that plays mostly 90’s alternative and hard rock. The tone of the flats didn’t quite match up to the...

How Many Basses at the Live Gig?

I have 4 basses total, and I ALWAYS bring 2 to a gig. Partly because I don’t want to feel like I’m neglecting any of them, but the main reason is 3 of them have active EQ, and no bypass. Instead of changing batteries before every gig, I bring my passive Fender Boxer bass along with one of the...

What’s the downside of Class D amps?

I had a Peavey MiniMax for a few years. It was great! The only reason why I sold it was because I was moving to another state and I needed the money. Peavey Max amps in general are good stuff. I don’t care what anyone else says.

    Active input vs passive input

All of my current basses have active eq and my Peavey Cirrus has active pickups as well. Lately I’ve been using the passive input on my practice amp, and switching the volume pad off on my live rigs. I play with 2 guitarists and I always find myself turning up my volume and sometimes even the...

    Are burst finishes out?

I used to be a burst fan. I’ve had a sunburst MIM Telecaster since I was 16(35 now). My taste has changed. I’m not a big fan of sunburst anymore. I like the natural look with a clear coat.

First bass, what am I looking for? Jazz or Percision

My first bass was a 4-string Soundgear. It served me well until I wanted a 5-string and I got myself a Jackson JS3.

    Peavey Max combos

I bought a used 208 in late 2019. It’s super reliable. It’s been used for gigs, home practice, and weekly band practice. Unfortunately it doesn’t have the built-in tuner like the other max amps but that’s small potatoes. Get one!

    Peavey?

I feel your pain. I had a Grind bass years ago. I sold it to get some money for another bass purchase, and I ended up with an Indonesian Cirrus 5. Love the Cirrus, but I miss that Grind so much.
