Are the new USA Lakland's the same?

Again, I do not really see this as a "problem". This is their design, and they have a lot of happy customers with it. I just don't care to be locked in to a preset neck curve, that's all. I am going to contact them and see if it is possible to get a traditional fingerboard on their necks.

Are the new USA Lakland's the same?

It really is only a negative in that Lakland doesn't really make a traditional neck despite all the talk about neck dimensions. When I discussed my frustration about this with Carl, the first thing he asked was "Why are you playing up there? There's nothing really going on up there!". Really...

Are the new USA Lakland's the same?

The problem is that you are actually prepping two separate and distinct sections of the neck. And these two sections need to be fretted and dressed as two separate sections. This works OK if the neck is kept exactly as it was once the bass left the factory, but if you want that neck to deviate...

Are the new USA Lakland's the same?

This really isn't a fret issue per se, and I want to make that clear. It is really a preference I have for a more traditional fingerboard. I love everything about the Lakland, the fret wire, the way they are leveled and dressed. I just do not care for the fall away. It is not that the bass is...

Are the new USA Lakland's the same?

I was told by both Carl Pedigo and Dan Lakin back in '05 that USA custom made their necks. At that time, the necks were all built with fall away. In addition, virtually all of the work on their basses was contracted out, including the finish work. They essentially were bass assemblers. Just...

Are the new USA Lakland's the same?

By " fallaway" I mean that the bass is fretted in such a fashion that when the neck is adjusted so that frets 1-14 or so are dead flat, the higher frets are lower, or actually "fallaway" from the straight plane of the lower frets. USA Custom Guitars ( who used to make Lakland necks and may...

New Fender tube heads at NAMM 2012

The " 45 and over" age segment is guys like me. Many of us used to use what are now vintage Fender and Ampeg tube amps. The lower powered ones used to go for $300-$500 all day long, not so long ago. You can still find them for around $600-$900 in road ready condition in the Midwest. So....given...

New Fender tube heads at NAMM 2012

The Rumble bass was killer. When it worked. It was plagued with reliability problems and a very high price from the get go. You can find the heads as cheap as $600 on occasion.

Are the new USA Lakland's the same?

Actually, the neck contruction to be specific. They always did a "fallaway" fret job on the old USA basses. This drove me nuts. It works well for acoustic guitars, but not so well for basses IMHO. If you play above the 12th fret, you know what I am talking about. Other than this issue ( for me...

    Fender Style Boutiques Overpriced?

I've had quite a few boutiques in my time, many of them Fender style. And some lemons. Not so much from the real craftsmen, I've never had a bad Pedulla, Tobias or Smith. But I have had a few strange USA Laklands and Lulls believe it or not. Fender is stepping up it's game because it has been...

    SOLD MusicMan HD150 amp

Wonderful amps for both bass and guitar. I have had both the 130 and 150, and they really get it done. But Leo had nothing to do with these amps FWIW, Tommy Walker did all of the design.

What are great basses with a really low resale value?

Pedulla, Pedulla, Pedulla. Name me another quality bass that's $4500 new, and can be had for $600 - $900 if the stars align.

    Gear you swear by

Older all tube Mesa heads, Mesa cabs from pretty much any vintage. And basses made in California in the 60's, 70's, and '80's. That's all.
