Get a battery tester and check the voltage. The cost will pay off when you have saved several batteries from thrown away too soon. I don't think 'actually using the preamp or not' makes a big difference. Once it's plugged in, it consumes the battery anyway.

I've always been a 5-string guy, and not spent so much time with 6-string basses. So if I had any problem playing 6 strings, it is likely my fault, not the instrument's. ;) And I never slap, so I can't say anything when someone asks "[How] can you slap with that tight spacing?" I do prefer tight...
