    NBD: RICKENBACKER

She’s gorgeous! Is that a factory-new bass? I have a 1976 AutumnGlo, but no checkerboard binding as I think Ric stopped using that technique in 1973. I absolutely love my Ricky!

    Unsung Singing Bassists

The Who’s John Entwhistle is my fave singing bassist.

1973 Bass received from a friend but don’t want it

Since it is at least partial compensation for a debt, I think you can sell it w/o peril. That said, if you do sell, I’d take it off your hands! I’ve been looking for a vintage P, and it nicely matches my black n white J. They would be perfect bookends for my 76 Ric.

    Best Female Singing Voice

Linda Rondstadt is the most correct answer. And she was often backed by one of the all time great bassists, Leland Sklar.

Was buying your dream bass worth it?

Yes! I bought my 1976 Rickenbacker AmberGlo with OHSC for $2,250 in 2010, thinking I would switch off a bit from my Fender American Deluxe Jazz, which I really liked. It had been in the case under a bed for 12 years and apparently not played much prior. I’ve hardly played the J in the last 6-7...

    Open or not?

Agreed, I play a 4 string, even so for me it depends on what the song requires. You gave two great examples; others are LZ’s Good Times Bad Times and Talking Heads’ Wild Wild life. But yeah, that makes transposition a bitch.

Most Iconic (not best/most technical) basslines

Many great examples above, I'd recommend Joe Cocker's original version of Feelin' Alright, bass by the awesome Carol Kaye. What a punchy groove!

i don’t use my pinky finger most of the time, is this detrimental to my playing??

I find using my pinky finger helps me change hand positions less often, which is critical when I’m singing lead vocal while playing bass. I can focus more on vocal stylings and still play an adequate bass part.

    Where do you stand?

I have always set up on the left (hi-hat side for a right-footed drummer). Can’t say why, but it’s always felt better, easier to feel the groove.

Name a band that everyone likes

A serious answer might be THE BAND. Never heard anyone say they didn’t like their music. I’m probably going to soon!

    Repetitive but good bass lines

Dr. John Right Place Wrong Time. 90% of the song is 3 notes. But What a groove! Killer lyrics too.

Is buying a 30 year old bass a good idea?

She's a beauty! I bought my 1976 Rick 4001 in 2010, she'd been under someone's bed for years and was still in excellent condition. We've been gigging together since then, she's my go to bass!

Most overused and cliche' words and phrases in cover band names...

I dunno, I’ve been in a classic rock cover band 11 years now named The Mediocritones. Self deprecation seems to work for us.
