    Double Bass Broken bow tip

Update: I got my tip replaced by Phill Dacunha at https://www.dcbows.com. Phill did a fine job and got the tip replacement and a rehair done within a week. His price for the rehair was what seems to be the DC standard $90. The tip replacement was $200, which I found to be quite reasonable. He...

    Double Bass Broken bow tip

Thanks. I’ll attend to this soon, and I’ll use my backup Brazilwood bow in the meantime.

    Double Bass Broken bow tip

I have a nice Bernd Dölling German bow that I've played with for about three years. This summer while trying to clean built-up rosin off the tip, I broke the (plastic? bone? fake ivory?) tip off the very beak of the bow. I kept the broken-off piece and took the bow to Brobst Violins in...

Double Bass New Rosin from Upton

I got mine last week. I was immediately impressed. I’ve been using Leatherwood 40 and 50 (depending on the temperature) for the past year or so. The Upton felt smoother and less scratchy from the first note I played, yet it grabbed the string well. I will stick with it for awhile. And the...

Double Bass Substitute for Spiro weich G?

The Perpetual G is working fine. No buzz, blends in sonically with the Spiros just fine. I have a full set of Perpetuals that I’ll put on it next time I change strings.

Double Bass Throw out all your rosin but this brand

Yes, I get it now. Your link to the Gollihur site convinced me. I went on the Leatherwood site and went through the checkout process, right up to clicking the purchase button. I saw that it did indeed list the prices in USD, but why do they list the price on the product page in AUSD...

Double Bass Throw out all your rosin but this brand

Not in my experience. I ordered two cakes of the “Amber Range” rosin from them last year. With shipping from Australia, the charge to my credit card came to about $32 US per cake, which is $3 more than the Wiedoeft from Gollihur. EDIT: Whoa! I just noticed that price on the Gollihur website...

Double Bass Throw out all your rosin but this brand

As I’ve mentioned before, the price quoted on their website is in Australian dollars. As of today, $46 Australian is about $29 US. That is $1 more per cake than Wiedoeft at Gollihur Music. So not really all that expensive.

Dr. Richard "Rick" Jones (Acoustic Image), 1947-2023

I just learned about Rick's passing just now when I ordered some strings from Gollihur Music. This is very sad news indeed. I bought an AI combo rig last year, and quickly got the clear impression of Rick as a person who cared a lot about his product and the music made with it. This is an...

Double Bass Throw out all your rosin but this brand

If you are not Australian, do not be misled by the prices given on the Leatherwood website. They are in Australian dollars. The price per cake is just a couple dollars more than Wiedoeft.

Double Bass Throw out all your rosin but this brand

I got some 60% and was using it for awhile. I'm playing a lot of low-register arco and wanted that big grab on the E and the A. But the past few weeks I've switched back to the 50%. It catches hold of the strings just fine and has a bit less scratchiness (for me) than the 60%. We'll see how it...

    Double Bass Upton Bass Club

Wow. Maybe the Standard Laminate I picked up last June is soon to be a collector’s item.

    Double Bass Upton Bass Club

My relatively new Upton (picked up in October of 2021) is a Bostonian. It is a wonderful, large, resonant beast. (It’s depicted in my avatar.) I also have a 3/4-size Upton Standard laminate, and it’s easier to move from place to place, and even to navigate as a player. But the sound of the two...

Double Bass As a jazz player, what do you practise with the bow?

Yeah, this is a good one. I was transcribing Slam’s solo on this just a few weeks ago.
