well i'm pretty sure that the only thing the pickups are mounted on is foam pads but thats a good thing to check, i'm pretty sure though that the pickups aren't too high cuz this problem started when I lowered them, but thanks for the responses

So I switched out the crappy, stock, duncan designed pickups on my squier, for some samarian noiseless fender pickups, but the noise problem on the bass is still the same. I checked to make sure the bridge ground was making a good contact and i don't see any other ground wires that i would need...

I think a lot of people have a different definition of "sound" and "tone". Getting Jaco's tone doesn't have much to do with his hands except maybe where he played on the strings. But his tone came from his pickups, his strings, his neck, and his amp. I'd say the most important parts of his tone...

thanks, that helps, i was thinking the hum thing was a grounding problem, because it goes away as long as i'm touching the strings or something but maybe the pickups are just noisy

I'm currently in the process of trying to upgrade my Fretless Squier jazz bass, which has some nice features so I decided I'd fix it up instead of buying another bass. I've already decided to scrap the Duncan designed pickups that came with it because i can't imagine stock pickups on a squier...
