I have no idea how much these things cost, I'm a complete noob when it comes to shopping. my first one was an impulse buy, spent 300 bucks for everything pretty much. now that i know how to play and what sounds good, i can see my bass is pretty much falling apart

I have the budget of a university student, so not much. I'll probably see about getting a part time job before i make the purchase, but im starting to check some out now. I wouldn't want to spend more than 1000$ on one, and even that kind of makes me cringe.
