Playing by ear versus playing by theory

I acknowledged in my first post that this is an impossible situation, or, if not impossible, so incredibly improbable that the difference is moot. I have a penchant for philosophy; In observing a situation that's impossible, I like to think about which one is better. As for my reading...

Playing by ear versus playing by theory

Understand that this is a hypothetical question/discussion. I am not intending in any way to justify ignoring ear training OR theory- I simply asking what your perspective is on this 'issue', and to give you my own. Say we've got two bass players- each being a platonic representation of a...

    Internalizing The Use of Intervals?

Yeah, props, bassandbeyond- that's exactly what I was thinking, but couldn't explain.

    eletric fifth tuning convert

I've tried it- it was interesting, but not something I liked; I prefer the good old fourths tuning. I do know, however, that the bassist from noise rock band Lightning Bolt tunes his bass in fifths- that's where I got the idea.

    Internalizing The Use of Intervals?

I think a good way to internalize the intervals would be to practice your scales in larger intervals- practice your scales in thirds, for example, and so on until you're entirely comfortable with every kind of interval.

    Solfege - What's the Point?

I have just a few questions, having read the thread and not quite understood all of it. First: do you people think that interval training is complimentary to fixed do solfege, or does it interfere with it? Second: when you change key in fixed do solfege, say from do as the tonic to fa as the...

    Modal theory query

I love the whole tone scale. It's got a beautiful sound. As to the history of modes- I do actually know rather a lot about the Greek modes and investigations into the physics of sound. Being a bored university student with access to lots of articles is helpful in life. Hell, I've got a lot of...

    Modal theory query

Alrighty, folks! I happen to know a relatively good amount of modal theory- I know how to construct the diatonic and melodic minor modes and everything. But my question here is: can you apply the modal framework to, say the pentatonic or blues scale? As in, you have the major pentatonic...

    polyphonic

No, a lead guitar, rhythm guitar, bass and drums fits in the category of homophonic music. Melody driven, but homophonic.

    Crap at Phrasing!!!

A phrase is the shortest 'unit' of a solo, if you will. Think of a solo as a paragraph, and a phrase as a sentence. This metaphor is particularly apt. A phrase should be something that you can say comfortably in one breath- to get phrasing down, start playing something in a scale you like, and...

Anyone else use their nails for a different tonality?

I have very short cut nails, but I use them to get really bright harmonics.

    Do you rewire your basses?

Playing my preferred passives, I don't like using a tone-knob, personally. Mostly because I prefer the Jazz Bass approach of having two pickups in parallel and blending the tones of the two pickups to get the sound you want. Sure, it's fiddly, but it's VERY versatile.

    Do you rewire your basses?

Well, his logic for his rewiring is actually pretty sound. The more stuff the signal from the pickup has to pass through- wire, pots, switches- the more it will degrade. Add in the fact that the tone-knob in a guitar or bass doesn't really do much but subtract from the sound, if you're EQing...

    Do you rewire your basses?

Not sure if this goes here, but I'd like to ask, so here it is. The question, as seen in the title, is: do you rewire your basses? I was reading an article (by a guitar player, admittedly) about how to get close to 'his tone'- the two main things that he said he used was heavy EQing (common...
