Summer Build Off 2024: Superseding Sanity

Ooooooo! Is this where we can start a flame war about tonewoods? As this is my first build and one of a rather small subset of completely inorganic basses, I'm trying to answer the ancient question that goes back to antiquity: What is the best bass tone-metal for metal? ;)

Summer Build Off 2024: Summer Slammin' Super Showdown Spectacular!

Thanks for adding my build thread @Beej ! I'm not super confident against the woodsmiths on the other builds, but I think there's a solid chance for me to embarrass myself with my ignorance and learn some new stuff.

Summer Build Off 2024: Superseding Sanity

Alright, still waiting for the bridge (after some lost parts, shipping/customs snafus) should be receiving bridge in the next week or two (hoping before end of the month). Also ordered some nichrome wire for the first of several side projects. First up: foam carving! I'm not going to be...

Summer Build Off 2024: Superseding Sanity

Will update with a few pictures shortly, been slow going and still waiting for some parts/tools for side projects. I was gifted a small propane foundry kit a few years back. I'm pretty limited on size since the crucible is not too large (maybe 7-8# of Al). Concerned about needing to do a...

Summer Build Off 2024: Superseding Sanity

I’ve wanted to build a bass for many years now and have read Melvyn Hiscock’s “Make Your Own Electric Guitar” many times over the years. Now, I’m biting off a lot with a very (overly) ambitious first scratch build for SBO24. This will be a VERY non-traditional bass; if you’re looking for a FSO...

    Ported acoustic bass

If you're really interested in experimenting, I would start backwards. Try taking a reasonably lightweight speaker cone and mounting a bridge to the center of the speaker (not the dust cap, but spider/frame holding the voice coil). You can take the magnet off and just have the string bridge...

    Ported acoustic bass

No, the bass string doesn't move an appreciable amount of air. For acoustic bass (or many other varieties of acoustic stringed instruments) the vibrations of the string are transferred through the bridge to the soundboard (guitar/bass top). The vibration of the top is what is moving most of...

DIY Headless Bass Tuner (Open Source)

I know Steinberger is the OG in the headless bass tuner world, but anyone ever played/looked at Strandberg? My Boden Prog 5 has a pretty good bridge/tuner setup. It doesn't ever slip and the biggest complaint I have is that you need a good amount of finger grip strength to turn it once you...

Backbeat Club - For Those Who Silently Rumble

Mine works fine on my Dingwalls. I can't speak to MTD or anything else, but the right angle works fine on my ABZ, my Combustion and my Strandberg Boden Prog 5. The Strandberg is probably the least comfortable, but the connection is still solid and works just fine. You could also use a...

SOLD Darkglass Microtubes 500 + SuperIntelligent Footswitch

I agree! I was pleasantly surprised with the clean channel and really liked being able to switch between the different channels with the SI footswitch. It's still a great small amp, I've just upgraded to the AO900 and the uT500 just isn't getting used.

SOLD Darkglass Microtubes 500 + SuperIntelligent Footswitch

First generation Microtubes 500 amplifier and superintelligent footswitch. Sounds great for fuzz/vintage overdrive/distortion. Only ever used for practice, never gigged. Not looking for trades; buyer pays shipping. Any questions about the amp, ask away!

    Getting that killer Megadeth tone.......

I'm not a huge fan of his, but Rick Beato does a whole video breaking down the song and there's a big section on the bass tone. You're definitely going to need something with a bit more high/hi-mid distortion. Personally I think Darkglass has it nailed, but with great tone comes great $$$...

    Brand new basses for $30?

A year or two ago I bought a $83 no-name bass off Wish. It came with a cable (extremely skinny with almost no insulation) with a straight end and a right angle jack and was worth it. For $83 (delivered) it plays ok. It's certainly not garbage or firewood as some people have said, but it's...

    Paint my Dingwall: vote!

I happen to really like the color and the wood grain so I'm a big fan of the ceruse look. Jacob Umansky has a really nice ABZ that I quite like the look of. Not sure I'd do black grain on white wood, but it is a good look.
