    The things is, it is SOOOO specialized and unique for each player that it's as if he's asking for what shoe size he should start wearing. He needs to go find what is right for HIM not what's right for someone else.

    Just go and buy what feels right, if other players laugh at you for what you play it's not worth your time to play with them anyways. As long as the bass fills your needs it's perfect, don't just go with a fender like every other Jaco wanna-be because it's "pro" My controversial 2 cents :)

    Scale length for a 5 string!!

    Nononononono, the extra longs will have no difference other than the fact you will be spending more money on specialized strings. Like I said, the fact that it is a longer scale length makes the tension go up. If you go with 100-40 it should have the same tension as 105-45 on a 34" scale length...

    Yamaha RBX170 If I recall correctly...first and only 4 string. This bass made me realize what I did NOT want to play. I then moved to a soundgear 5 string, which I liked very much minus the lack of strings. I then moved onto a soundgear 6 string of the same model. AGAIN, not evenough strings...

    Hey there! Go with the same length strings, Extra long is for 36" and up scale length, though usualy not even for 36". The reason why they are tighter is because by increasing scale length you are inscreasing string tension. If you currently are using a .100 gauge E string for example, go...
