I know this thread is ancient but is there really still no answer on this??? I know about SD mini hum buckers but has no one added active pups to a violin bass??? I love mine but it only sounds decent after compression and eq. Everyone mods the hell out of P&J's when they don't need it but...

My only 2 basses are a Fender Jazz and a cheapo (not Hofner) violin bass. The violin is the go to practice bass and my favourite as it's miles easier to play. Add a pre-amp, a compressor/limiter, a reverb pedal, much better strings and eventually it sounds alright.
