Bee Baybee, Fanner PeeWee and Marleaux Consat Soprano (23" scale BEAD tenor bass tuning)

I find these super short scale basses interesting. The Bee Bass Baybee has a 23.5" scale, the Fanner Guitar Works PeeWee bass has a 22.8" scale, and the Marleaux Consat Soprano has a 22.44" scale. Seems like with this scale length you could take a regular set of EADG strings and tune it BEAD -...

    Steve Swallow album recommendations

Steve Swallow is a name that comes up when folks list bassists that use a pick. Also of interest is his 5-string electric bass tuning of EADGC. Wikipedia's discography list for Swallow is a mile long. Can anyone recommend some albums or links to live performances that showcase his bass playing...

    Charnett Moffett

I feel late to the party, but I just got hip to a bassist named Charnett Moffett, via his superb new album called New Love. A best of 2021 contender, for sure. Moffett's playing and arrangements kind of reminds of jamband guys like Phil Lesh and Mike Gordon of Phish. I could be way off the...

    G-C-F-Bb tuning?

I thought of a possible solution - single course Bajo Quinto strings and scale length! The Bajo Quinto has a 25.5" scale length - same as or similar to the scale used for an acoustic guitar or openback banjo. So the scale length would be 25.5" since that's a pretty common one. And the Bajo...

Need help adding bass-lines to melodies

Ha! That's exactly what I intend to do! And/or that feels like where I am at. I have monophonic lines and now it's the 1700's and I'm going to add a second line to make them polyphonic. There's a mnemonic which allows one to remember all the modes: "I Don't Punch Like Muhammed Ali". Ionian...

    Left-handed Short Scale Bass options?

I didn't know about the Sire U5 Marcus Miller Short Scale. Thanks. That may be something I could upgrade to after I've been playing for half a year or so. I was also looking at the Eastwood Warren Ellis Bass in lefty, but that's even pricier than the Marcus Miller.

Need help adding bass-lines to melodies

Thanks @ACRock So it looks like you're thinking that it can work with just two chords...toggling between what I would call a "ii" chord (Aminor in this case) and a "I" chord (Gmajor in this case). With the "ii" chord being home and the "I" chord being away. That would lead me to think that it's...

Need help adding bass-lines to melodies

Wow @bolophonic ! That is so much like my style of melody it's uncanny. You're much more advanced and professional than I am...adding layers over the course of the track to develop movement, but as far as a modal/minor melody that has a creepie sea shanty or almost Northern European vibe that's...

Need help adding bass-lines to melodies

I think the reason is that I've neglected the study of harmony since my ear is so drawn to melody. This will help get me thinking that way. And to help add some interest to the bare bones melody.

Need help adding bass-lines to melodies

Thanks. No chords changes at this point. These are just monophonic melodies so I don't think in terms of chords. For a person that has the ear for it, perhaps many different possible chord progressions or variations are implied upon hearing it. I'm not that person. I don't hear "chords" I hear...

Need help adding bass-lines to melodies

New member and new to bass playing. I've written a bunch of monophonic melodies and now I'd like to add some bass-lines. If I were to share some recordings would anyone like to try and help me compose the bass parts? I've attached an mp3 as an example. The tune is called Sixth Noon of Midnight...

    G-C-F-Bb tuning?

Hello, I'm thinking of working with a local acoustic stringed instrument maker (guitars, wood-topped banjos, mandolins) to make a no frills unamplified "bass" type practice instrument. Lower pitched than the low E on an acoustic guitar, but maybe not as low as a the low E on an acoustic bass...

    Left-handed Short Scale Bass options?

New member here. I'm considering getting my first bass guitar for home use only. No gigging. Simply to add bass-lines to some melodies I've written and study harmony. I definitely want short scale. And it has to be lefty. The two options I've found are: Ibanez Mikro Bass Pros: brand name, very...
