How bad (or good) was your first bass?

My first bass was a Mosrite Ventures. I had to switch from guitar to bass for the band I was in and I wanted something respectable to play. It was heavy but sounded great. Sold it to my drummer who still has it. (even though he can't play it!)

The Official Short Scale Bass Club -- Part 4

I got a stock 4 post bridge from Wilkinson and filed new grooves in two of the positions. I couldn't find a Mustang bridge, which is what I wanted. Three of the holes matched. The rest I drilled.

The Official Short Scale Bass Club -- Part 4

Bought this gem for $70. It had been used in a music video and was covered in stage blood (Karo syrup and red food coloring) even under the pickguard. I disassembled the entire bass (even the tuners had to be taken apart), cleaned everything then started to rebuild it. Installed an adjustable...

Was Your First Bass (Basses) What Your Idols Played?

My first was a Semie Mosley Mosrite (Ventures) bass. My drummer and I still have it. We were doing a 3 piece (Piano, drums and guitar/bass) ala Elton John. I bought it because I wanted that sound it produced, (surf music) not because of the band.

    Heaviest Bass You've Ever Owned?

Heaviest I ever owned was an Epiphone Thunderbird bass. Very top heavy and boy did that make your shoulder sore after a couple of hours! I Currently have a Sterling Sub Bass which comes in at a little over 9 pounds, and that is plenty!

Why you don't cheap out on gig bags (warning - disturbing pictures)

Reminds me of a Bronco bass I bought years back to alter. It had been used in a music video and was covered in Stage Blood.. a combination of red dye and karo syrup. I had to tear it down to clean every screw and crevice, even under the pickguard!

If you could snap your fingers and play in any band at any period of time?

I would have loved to swap places with Carol Kane. She is just one of the best!

What was your first bass amp and how bad was it?

I was lucky. The first bass amp I had was a Fender Bassman 10 with 4 10" speakers. Great tone and kept up with the other amps. It was borrowed from me by Obie Jessie (brother of Dewayne Jessie aka Otis Day) and he never returned it. If you know him tell him to give it back to me.

Short Scale Journey Didn't Last Long

I have a short scale Squire Bronco Bass that I just love to play. No neck dive and much lighter than my Music Man bass. I did (however) modify it with a new and better bridge, a rails pickup, a preamp, and a modified pickguard. It surprises many of the great sounds when I play it.

One brand for the rest of your life

Ampeg. Still the best bass sounds.

If you could take lessons from any bass player...

Carol Kaye or Geddy Lee (I don't care for his voice but his playing is astounding!) John Entwistle would have been great, but nobody plays like him.
