Trust me, I dislike the never ending metal genres aswell. But the hardcore that I know and that the bands in my area play is nothing like BTBAM. It just seems so wrong to group them in with some of the crap that's in hardcore.

Prog metal =/= hardcore.

I don't know how you couldn't like a song like Viridian.

Hardcore in general is not a talent heavy genre. But from many hardcore bassists I know, there talent is not properly portrayed in the music they play, as it just wouldn't fit the music most of the time.

My influence to play bass didn't come from any bassists, it was from my dad and brother. Two guitar players that needed a bass player to make there music a bit more interesting. From there the two players I have alawys admired are Victor Wooten and John Entwistle.

I'm sorry, but this is just plain awful advice. There is nothing wrong with trying to break the mould in a genre. Just because most metal bass players lack the musical ability to play anything other than roots does not mean that everyone should conform to that standard and put the music second...
