The X series is more touch sensitive & reacts more like a passive pickup, & has more harmonic content. 40 is the number for 5 strings & 45 is the number for 6 strings, so not relevant for you if you are buying a NS-5.

Redwood is much warmer all around. The bottom end is a little open & blooms, but not as much as alder. The midrange is fairly articulate, has decent punch but doesn’t have that much growl.
