I set my preamp gain where I like it, just before it breaks up, then I crank my master volume on the amp to gig level volume..say 12 o,clock. Only then do I increase the volume on the boss pedal above unity level to my desired louder gig level. It got really loud, and my dialed-in gain tone...

I was looking to squeeze as much power out of the walkabout as possible on small to medium size gigs with not much luck. I too tried tube rolling and different speaker configs, then I ended up using the walkabout as a preamp driving a genz streamliner power section which worked quite well...
