Mesa Boogie Walkabout Mega-thread Pt 7

I see that this thread gets quite a bit more action then the other MESA threads, so I'll ask here. I recently picked up a Mesa M-Pulse 360 and a PH610 to pair with my PH412 (sounds MASSIVE). I picked up the PH610 and the M-Pulse used off a guy local to me, and it's in great condition. He bough it new about 3.5 to 4 years ago, and never did a tube swap. Once the gain on my amp gets to 12 - 1 o'clock, the amp starts to break up, but not very nicely. I'm not necessarily wanting a fat OD from the preamp, and I know I'm not going to get that, but with a tube swap should I be expecting a change in the tone of the gain section?

I've never played a MP600 but the Walkabout's gain structure changes only in a subtle way with tube changes. My guess is the 600 is the same.

That's kinda what I was thinking, and it's not a problem, I love this amp, was just a little curious. I've been very happy with this amp since I got it, awesome EQ section, I'm hoping to get my hands on a Walkabout in the future as well.

If you are concerned about the mixed drivers. try upending the cabs so you have a vertical array 15/10/10 - you will hear yourself better (as the speakers are nearer your ears) and will have a better balanced sound throughout the room.

Walk away from the rig to listen and see what you think.

The ones advertised on eBay to fit Fender and Mesa are all the same size. My WA came with a red jewel but currently sports an amber. I bought the purple jewel from Mesa but it appears very dim and hard to tell it was on. You could change the incandescent bulb to an LED to be able to light up a darker jewel which I will do as I also need bulbs for my pinball machine.

+1. Note the farther away you are out in the room and the more you roam from side to side the more you are likely to hear a difference between the vertical setup and the "usual" configuration. Note that this also applies to the "same vs different" cab setups.

It is probably a decent solution for those folks looking for a bit more clean headroom- in theory it will give you the most possible clean headroom, but will not raise the overall ouput wattage. It should be noted that the FX Loop comes after the Master Volume though, so you would need to use a boost pedal capable of handling (and putting out) a pretty hot signal (hotter than your average active bass) without distortion.

The FX loop comes after the Master Volume? Would there be a block circuit diagram to be found anywhere?
Yes, it would need to be a very clean boost pedal and I think this setup will work for me, giving me that little exra volume that i'm looking for and should save me from bringing a second spkr cabinet on small gigs. On larger gigs, i'd be bringing my second cab anyway, so I wouldn't need the extra boost in that gig situation.

The PH 610 AND the 412?:eek: Not to take anything away from the amp, but you could probably run the head from a B15 through that combo and sound massive.:D

Yeah- in all the Mesa solid-state amps I've used the FX Loop is post-Master for some reason (Master comes after the FX loop in every other amp I know of!). You can tell by plugging another preamp into the FX Return- the Master has no effect on level. Makes the FX Loop pretty useless for anything apart from a Limiter or tuner unless you have effects with a very forgiving input. I'd be concerned that most standard boost pedals wouldn't have enough headroom to take such a strong input signal without distorting...

That's no good at all. I will need to look at mine a bit closer to see if there are any potential issues. I hope that the Odyssey works out better for you.
