    Vintage 1979 Ampeg 8 x 10" speaker question thread

IMO, those early SVTs with two cabs were wonderful. As you probably remember, t he cabs had a removable caster plate so you could play with the cabinets off or on the stage floor. Hollow stage, keep the casters on. Solid stage, casters off.

Is It Appropriate To Take Home A Doggie Bag From A Gig ?

I once experienced a guitarist who brought a Kentucky Fried Chicken dinner to the gig and proceeded to eat it between songs. The B.L. fired him that night.

What is your Criteria for not taking a Gig?

For a full time musician, the distance/drive time and the gig hours 10 - 2 are no big deal so long as the money's right. For a musician who has a day job and gigs for supplemental income and fun, distance/drive time and the gig hours 10 - 2 may be daunting or just not worth doing. Good luck with...

What would a beefier Jazz Bass be?

The precision bass pickup is a humbucking pickup and as such emphasizes mid-range frequencies. Mid-range frequencies are easiest for the human ear to hear which is why a P-Bass "sounds" fatter than a Jazz Bass. The two single coil pickups of a Jazz bass especially in tandem are producing a wider...

Moving - will the movers destroy everything?

I'd be careful to hire a moving company that will load your possessions and then drive them directly to your destination (once you get one). Moving companies have a tendency pick up a load or partial load and deliver it to a moving company warehouse where it will sit until they have a truck...

Bass for playing the leading role in a band

Mids are the most audible frequencies to the human ear. That's one of the reasons so many recording bassists play a Fender Precision Bass. Great mids and they are quiet because that P-Bass pickup is a humbucking pickup. If you want a great grand piano bass sound Dingwall is making some great...

    Passive-aggressive behavior

When personalities override professionalism things get dicey. Is this a band with intent to record original material and tour? Or simply a band cover band intent on making some extra money playing locally? I ask because that would make a major difference in whether I continue to be a member of...

How many have had amps over 10 years and still use them?

I had a 1965 Fender Dual Showman with 2 x 15" JBL D130Fs. Piggyback style amp with the original small size spkr. cab.. Best sounding amp I've owned but it would have been too small as time marched on and amps got bigger and more powerful before using DI's and or micing through the front of house...

My Ash P Bass sounds too bright

P-Bass naturally has more emphasis on mids. J-Bass has a wider spectrum of sound due to two single coil pickups and the pickup placement. For instance, if you play/pluck/pick your P-Bass nearer to end of the neck it will sound different than if you play/pluck/pick closer to the bridge.

Is it ever acceptable to wear shorts at a gig?

I'd say it's acceptable with the whole band wearing shorts. Probably not acceptable if only one player wears shorts.

Highly Modified Does Not Equate To Higher Prices

As in beauty, value is in the eye/ear/hands of the beholder. Upgrading an inexpensive bass to make it sound and or play better makes a lot more sense than paying an exorbitant price for a "classic/vintage' bass. Bass guitars are made better and more consistently today than ever before because of...
