Dingwall Combustion 5 (3 pickups) vs Spector Dimension HP 5

Dingwall! There is a good reason why you see these in EVERY genre. You hear about metal the most, but that is nowhere near what they can all do. I can use my 6 string in my avatar in a Sunday morning church service AND in a metal gig AND in an R&B gig AND whatever else. One thing that OFTEN...

Refinish or leave as is?? Dingwall Fretless ABII

UPDATE!! I finally found the flaw. It’s very small and is on the side that would face you as you were playing. In the picture, you can see a guitar pic next to it. I have a light just a couple of inches from the bass to get this flaw to show up. Dingwall assured me there would be no flaw in the...

Edit Thread Title, Edit original Thread!??!

Hey guys, this has probably been covered somewhere, but I’ve been searching for days and can’t find it. When you are the OP of a thread, how can you edit the title or your original post?? I can’t find a button anywhere!! I see how I can edit my responses to the thread, but I wanted to update...

    Bongo vs Dingwall

Dingwall by a LONGSHOT! Especially to nail that stingray sound on STEROIDS! "Made in the USA" means nothing to me anymore. I have seen some USA made that is crap and WAY overpriced. Don't get me wrong, a lot of great made in USA basses out there. But so are MANY others!! I've been in the...

Refinish or leave as is?? Dingwall Fretless ABII

Thanks! Once I have put on a few months to a year with this bass I will know all that I want to do. I will see if someone at Dingwall will do it first as some of them do after hours work in the factory. They are my go to since they literally know every aspect of these basses. But someone else...

Refinish or leave as is?? Dingwall Fretless ABII

Thanks! It has been AWESOME to get all of this feedback. What you said is where I am landing. Dingwall sent me tips on how to level the fretboard myself. They said it's not that hard to do when the fretboard itself is good (which it is). So I will do that... and then play this beauty as is until...

I actually have no idea on the strings. It's what it cam with. They are round wounds and may be standard Dingwall strings. I like round wounds for the harmonic content, but I don't like the shifting sounds when doing vibrato. I may get half wounds or ground wounds. I don't want flat wounds as I...

Refinish or leave as is?? Dingwall Fretless ABII

For sure. If I was to get this refinished, I would actually want it to be done by a person who works at the factory. Some of those guys do after hours work in the very same factory. And yes, Jesus blessed me. Now I did a lot of research, I did my due diligence with the seller (awesome guy!) and...

You can definitely get unlined. I really like the version where there’s a little bit of freight line on the bass and the treble side. But you can see in this other picture that you can have it with nothing on the front.

The Dingwall tips would be a temporary fix IMHO. I'm guessing the woods will continue to move at different rates. Maple and Wenge are quite different, need to lock it in at some point. I need to decide if I want to stay on the slippery side. So far the benefits are interesting. A lot less...

Refinish or leave as is?? Dingwall Fretless ABII

Thanks, I'll keep it in mind. I'm only 2.5 hours from the Dingwall Factory, so I'll start with those local guys first and work from there. First I will get more familiar with the bass and decide all I want done. Just got it last week.

Right! If you know Ziricote, then you know what I mean. I have loved it for decades. New info, Dingwall said if there IS any oddity, it would be in the Walnut. Well the front it all you see 99% of the time! But I love weirdness. If there IS a horrible thing, I would have it taped off at the...

Re fretless: A huge advantage for me would be that I have only played Dingwall for the past 3 years now. So then my muscle memory is already pretty good. I've heard from several fretless Dingwall players that it really isn't that hard. That being said, I haven't touched a fretless for 30 years...

Refinish or leave as is?? Dingwall Fretless ABII

Dingwall tech support is awesome. They did some checking with guys in the shop and said the only possible anomaly would be in the Walnut (if it is there at all). Well that is just the back and sides. Also, I love wood weirdness. Under a very bright light, I couldn't see anything odd under the...

I just got this used fretless and it’s beautiful!🤩 It seems to be hiding a secret though, which has me very intrigued! The big question is to refinish or not? Roll the dice and risk there could be a flaw? I’ve never had anything refinished. I would only be trusting this to a highly credible...
