Try using a cleaner boost pedal in front of the amp to slam the preamp a little harder; that's what guitarists do. I saw this on a review "do not attempt to crank up the pre-amp tubes but use the O.U.T.P.U.T.-tubes." that's why I thought it should be better to get distortion with the fx loop or...

I have an older (early 90's) SVT II (non pro) all tube head. This head has only one channel and volume control, no gain. So I have to put the volume very low (2 or 3), and I can't get some tube distorsion without blowing everything up... So, to have a more distorted sound I use a bluesdriver...

the old (made in solid green iron) russian sovtek big muffs are OK for bass, be aware that the US model (shiny iron) is different and (to me) not very accurate for bass. the newer russian (black plastic) is ok too.

instead of switching on/off the pedal, I prefer to adapt the gain/level settings to each song. with 0 gain, the sound of the BD2 is nice too (not far away from the clear sound, with less low freqs)
