What is your favorite string that is no longer made?

Old D'Addario steel half rounds. I emailed them a while back asking and an employee sent me a set for free from his own personal stash at home. Best strings I've ever played and I accidentally left them on a bass I sold.

Nope. He's talking about the original copper plated XL Reds. The new ones are copper coated, and the presence of copper on the EXP set is purely cosmetic. The original Reds had their own warm unique sound. Those are the one string set I was sad to see get discontinued. On a Ripper there was nothing that could compare.

Others I really miss:

D'Addario Prisms (beautiful roundwound that lasted forever) and D'Addario Slowounds (rich tone and unbelievable stability no matter how hard you played them).

What is it with D'Addario? Anything really good they seem to drop. Are they that purely volume driven?

The reds I've played were uniquely warm, IME IMO. I don't think the copper was just cosmetic. I couldn't stick with them cuz they weren't available in light enough gauges.

I found the new EXPs nothing much special whereas the old plated copper ones amazed me and the band I was in at the time.

There is a small company that's now making custom red copperwounds. They're $60 a set and look promising. I've got some on order and have my fingers crossed.

@Gorn was correct, I was referring to EXP Reds. I found them to be super warm, part of why I liked them. I guess I wasn't the only one to miss them.
