If I take the recommendation to bind the fretboard, that I cut too narrow, I am torn between a pure black ebony (on the right) or macassar ebony (to the left). Personally I am leaning to the macassar as it has browns to complement the black palm.

A quick glue on of some roasted maple and we have a headstock width. Still looking at salvaging the black palm fretboard so once that is settled I can attach the black palm headstock overlay and shape it.

The macassar strip was too wavy for me to straighten up so I ripped off some ebony binding strips and found an offcut from a headstock to use at the base. with a graphite nut the board will be framed and I will leave the headstock unbound.
Headstock overlay glued with obligatory clamp farm.
New clamp farm with even more clamps. I had to remove the headstock overlay and redo. I my haste I neglected to insure it would end up in the right spot to align with the end of the fretboard and nut. I had to remove more from the top of the headstock before adding the overlay. Luckily there was enough material to cut a new overlay.

Cool project and nice work! I’m glad someone is doing Carvin tributes. I was never a Carvin “fan”, but I feel like the world is a slightly sadder place since they went away.
Thanks, it started as a tribute build but I have since moved away from the overall Carvin design and used my own. Still some aspects of the Carvin are being used mainly the neck plane parallel to the body top and raised by 1/8" and body thickness. I was going to change the title but seem not able to do so.
A quick go with a coping saw and the headstock is rough cut.
I glued a piece of ebony on the end of the fretboard and trial fitted the bindings to see what the look was going to be like. Not bad. I'm liking the black palm for this one.
So far all the wood bits are down to 7 lbs 1oz. I still have the pickup routes, control cavity, neck profiling and body rounding to do yet.
