Here is a pic of my recently purchased Gretsch G2202. I have replaced the stock TV Jones mini humbucker with a Thunder'Tron pickup and upgraded the pots & electronics.

I have been playing guitar for a number of years now but this was my 1st attempt at any mods - I have to say I am pretty pleased with the results but I would not have been able to do it without the help of the TB community (+ hours of reading to get my head around it all!)

I am now considering adding 2 x single coil pickups on either side of the Thunder'Tron to add a bit more clarity......

What are your overall thoughts on the Gretsch?
How is the weight/balance of that bass?

Beatlesfan64 - overall I think it is a good investment considering the price i paid. I was looking for a small scale with classic good looks as I am fairly new to bass (being a guitarist) and found my squire P bass to be too big for me.

My biggest gripe about it is that it's a tad muddy for my liking - i tried to rectify this by upgrading the stock TV Jones minibucker for a Thunder'Tron which made a bit of difference but not a huge amount, and the 500k pots with 0.47 cap for 1meg pots and a 0.22 cap. The sound is now much clearer and louder which is more to my liking especially since I put some heavy La Bella Hard Rockin' steels on there 54-75-90-111. However I think the biggest improvment in tone would be to add another pickup near the bridge - i have been considering modding this but have since found out that Gretsch sold a 2 pickup version of this bass called the G1222. Can't find any of these knocking about but will probably wait till 1 appears on ebay and get that (if i should be so lucky!)

I have also replaced the nut purely as I found the E & G strings to be very close to the edge of the neck which was a pain at times when trying to bend strings. The strings are now slightly closer together which also makes it easier to play. Apart from that I shielded the cavities and moved the top strap button to behind the neck as I found it to be a bit neck heavy - but not a lot. It was more of a personal preference really as I am used to the weight/balance distribution of guitars. I would also like to change the machine heads as I think they look too big compared to the rest of the bass but this is purely cosmetic.

Overall I am pleased as punch with this investment. Hope this helps!

Hey cool, I was just about to ask if anyone had any more specific info on the pickup in the G2202 (aside from the fact that it is a "TV Jones-produced mini-humbucker"), and whether a Thunder'Tron would make any difference.

Also that is interesting about the G1222. I'm pretty sure someone in the last thread posted a picture of one. At the time, I thought they had just modded a G2202.

I see you have a Gretsch G2202 as well and are also a recent bass convert like me! Great minds think alike

I am currently hunting around for the G1222 - i have a funny feeling there are probably loads of them knocking about in Korea where they were made. If I find anywhere that has them i will let you know....

I played it for a couple hours last night and it's pretty nice. Doesn't seem heavy at all, about the same as my other basses. It was pretty easy to play too.

Basically a new body, reshaped headstock and swapped chrome hardware with black hardware I had in my parts bin. I liked the bass in it's original form mainly because the neck is just fantastic, but it's so much better now in it's current form.

Hello everyone. I figured this would be the best place to start asking questions. I recently came into a short scale bass that I plan on fixing up. As you can see from the pictures there is no neck plate or any other hardware and there are also no identifying markers. Before repairing it I'd like to know what the heck it is. The length is 37 and 3/16" from end to end and the head stock on it leads me to believe that it may be a squier or possibly a peavey but again I can't be sure. I'd like to know the exact model so I can start finding parts for it. Can anyone help me out??? Thank you for your time.

Project Bass, what would the scale measure out to... approx? The bridge location seems very far from the end of the body so it almost looks like it could be <28" scale.
