Wish I played in a band from 1977-1991......

It was a blast. In the 70s I had a J Bass and a Rick 4001 that I played through an Ampeg v4 B that powered a 2x15 Ampeg cabinet and a 3x15 Kustom cabinet, which my friends carried around for me. That sucker wold loosen your teeth. You guys should be jealous! At least your Amps are lighter and...

What’s the downside of Class D amps?

I have an Ampeg V 4 B head that weighs around 65 pounds. It’s staying in my living room. If I gig, I want class D for the weight. Nobody has ever walked up to me and said “boy, I wish you didn’t have that tiny class D amp”.

Gene Simmons says you can only be heard if you play with a pick

Jamerson showed the world the possibilities of the Precision bass. I can hear him perfectly all the time. Picks and fingers both sound great when the right person is using them. Gene Simmons is a terrible bass player and a completely unrepentant DB. I can hear his bass parts fine, but I do...

    John Klingberg

Rachel, I was just listening to Into the Mystic. I was a professional bass player out of Chicago for close to 20 years, and one of my favorite memories is playing the song on upright bass. It is in my opinion one of the most beautiful, effective and perfect (except for that one wrong note!) bass...

Short-scale basses are no substitute for long-scale basses?

Ask Jack Bruce, he didn’t seem to have a problem making a short scale bass work. Of course he was playing through a couple of Marshall stacks on 11, so that may have something to do with it.

It's 1970, you have some decent money in your pocket....which large bass rig do you buy?

SVT with 8x10 can, natch. A V 4B with the matching 2x12 would also work; that was my rig back then. Wish I could play that loud again!

You get one song to listen to for the rest of your life. What is it?

Son of Mr. Green Jeans or The Gumbo variations.

Kawai FIIB Owners Group, or FOG

I got one recently and I love it. Unfortunately the input jack is making some crazy noises which make the bass unplayable when amplified, which is a bit of a problem! Does anyone else have this problem with theirs?

Songs that you shouldn't love, but do.

I was actually making love in the dunes on the Cape when this song was a hit.

Ouch...bass player called out on stage for being out of tune.

I couldn’t hear the bass, but the background vocals were way out of tune and wouldn’t have sounded that great if they were in tune. What an embarrassing move on her part. I just lost some respect for her.

Who inspired you to play bass, Paul McCartney or Paul McCartney?

I didn’t even know Paul was playing bass when I was a youngster who loved the Beatles. I just thought they were all playing guitars. Flailed away at guitar and never got into it. One day I was 15 and a musician down the street told me I was a bass player. I had to ask him what a bass was. Been...

Intentional irony: A good bassist on an inexpensive bass

I played a ton of gigs with a Mexican P-Bass and many nights someone would ask me if it was a Pre-CBS P. Many interesting reactions! I left my 65 Jazz at home. Not worth getting it stolen after a $75 blues gig.

I predict I will be fired by the end of weekend

Just leave the band. That music is horrible if you don’t love it, so I don’t see why you’d stay with them.

What's the Best rig you've played through?

V4B Head and 2x15 Cabinet. If I really wanted to get crazy I would add a Kustom 3x15 and my teeth would rattle. Head and cabinet stolen, and when I sold the Kustom the guy cut it into 3 sections and wanted his money back when one of the speakers turned out to be blown. I told him to get a time...

Okay, let's be honest, is there a bass that you always have lusted after?

I already have a 1965 Jazz Bass. I used to lust after an Alembic until I played one. I would like a nice Pedulla if anyone would like to give theirs away!

    What Constitutes a Professional Musician?

I played in some Chicago Blues Bands for 20 years, recorded 6 CDs, put in about 300,000 miles touring in N America and Europe, played a lot of very large festivals, and paid taxes on the pitiful amount of money I made as a musician. Never considered myself as anything more than a semi-pro at...

One brand for the rest of your life

Depends on whether someone’s gonna carry the amp for me. If yes, Ampeg and Ampeg. If not, whatever the warmest sounding ultralight amp and speakers are.

"We are never coming to see your band again!"

I played in a blues jam session host band. Electric violin guy comes up does his solo, then takes 2 more choruses and is getting on everyone’s last nerve. The singer finally had enough and told him to get down, meaning “get off the stage right now” but the guy thinks she means “yeah man, get...

Why did you quit a band?

So you’re a snitch? Not cool buddy, you should have left the band and kept your mouth shut. That was really lame.

Why did you quit a band?

I quit playing in public altogether. 25 years of playing bass in blues bands will do that. It was fun for a while but ultimately it was soul-crushingly boring.

Being embarrassed by basses you love?

Congratulations on having such a wonderful problem: 2 basses that you like, both of which feel and sound the way you want. Trust me, save your money and play what works for you.

    Greatest Precision Player?

Jameson was a musical genius who pretty much redefined the role of the electric bass, while coming up with some the most beautiful, simple sounding yet complex bass lines full of chromaticisms and syncopations. Everyone on that list is a great player (even the ones whose music I can’t stand) but...

    Flats - Do I need to man-up?

You might want to try Fender Tapewounds. It’s a flat nylon (I think) coating over roundwounds. It’s a nice middle spot between flats and roundwounds. Most importantly, they look cool on a maple neck! Played them for years when I was in a lot of different kind of bands. Went to flats on a P when...

    Dream Bass Let-Down

I had the same problem with a beautiful Rickenbacker. It did what Ricks do, and I liked the unbelievably clear tone I could get with a pick but I just didn’t enjoy playing it. Went back to my Fenders. Tried a few Gibson’s and Guilds but nothing felt as good as my J or P-basses. It’s been 30...

"We are never coming to see your band again!"

Some really get mad when you tell them you don’t care for SRV. I’ve had people yell at me for it. Kind of comical really.

Are higher priced Fenders really worth it?

I played a $300 Mexican P with some kind of vintage Fender 60s replacement pickups and LaBella flats. At least 50 people have asked me if it was a perfectly restored 62 P. So no, as far as a P Bass with flats.

It happened again... why don't people ask in advance.

Just bring a cheap extra bass with the action set super high and the neck bowed to hell and put the good bass in its case on the breaks.

It happened again... why don't people ask in advance.

I used to play a 65 JB. Took a break at a gig, had a smoke outside and walk back into the bar and there’s a guy sitting on my amp and playing my bass. I give myself a 10-count and take a deep breath to calm myself down and asked him to put it down and get off the stage. Then he got upset with...

    Most unforgiving bass guitar?

Jameson’s P-Bass was notoriously difficult for anyone else to play.

Vintage Fender experts, have at this CL ad.

Too many words and pointless stories about brothers and garages. The whole thing reads like an ad for some very nice Florida swampland.

Cheapest bass you've ever put aftermarket pickups in.

My buddy gave me a Squire P that he paid $60 for. Put in some Fender pickups, I think they were called classic 60’s or something. Sounded amazing and played like a dream. Then I gave it to my brother. I want it back.

American Fender pickups in a Mexican P-Bass. People keep asking me if it’s pre-CBS.

Would you do this to a new Fender AVRI '63?

If you’re that determined to waste $2500 on a bass that you won’t play but are willing to deface you can just give it to me. Play it or sell it.
