Is it better to replace the original coat hanger wire with a braided steel wire on Elkhart basses?

I just got a used Ned Stienberger WAV4 bass. It has a Polar pickup system that toggles between bowed and pizz. The newer models have a "blending" knob instead if the toggle. Is it possible to replace the toggle with a blending knob? If so, what is the knob called so find one?
