Learning to Play Guitar as a Bassist

I'm a decent amateur bassist. I want to start playing some rhythm guitar, mostly for my own songwriting. I need a little advice. I can read music in bass and treble. I can technically play guitar, I studied classical as a young man, so I can finger pick okay. I know chords, more than just the...

    I Play Too Stacato

I am not a fast player but even when I play slow or moderately there is too much space between the notes. Any advice other than try to make the notes connect? Any exercises? Thanks!

Warming Up vs. Starting Practice Slow

I've been practicing a lot chord tone exercises. When I start my practice session I can only do the easiest. But after 10 minutes or so I can play fingerings that involve more finger independence and string crossing. Do you guys just start easy and slowly or do you have specific ways up...

Double Bass I'm a Beginner and Tried a Good Bow

My bow is a $75 CF bow. I'm pretty sure it's a Glasser bow. Yesterday during my lesson my teacher had me try his nice wooden bow. I forget what he said it was worth but it was not cheap. What I noticed immediately was that I could feel the vibration of the string in my finger tips. I don't get...

Double Bass String Advice & Changing Strings Question

I have recently started double bass. My bass was originally set up with Spirocore lights with the bridge set low with flatter arch. I am playing arco since I am studying classical. This was tough for bowing and I was triple stopping. I had my teacher look at it in case it was just bad technique...

Double Bass I'm Having My Setup Adjusted for Classical

When I bought my bass years ago the shop I bought it at, David gage, did a jazz setup and put Spirocores on it because my desire was to play jazz bass. Unfortunately, I hardly played it and stuck to electric. In fact I thought of selling it! But recently I decided to study classical bass. One...

Double Bass How to Carry a Double Bass

I'm sure this has been asked a million times. I have a Mooradian Bag for my bass. I use the wheel when I have to walk long distances. But what is the easiest, least stressful to the back, way to carry a bass up and down stairs, on to subways, etc. Thanks!

    Double Bass First Lesson

I just wanted to post this somewhere and I figure people here would understand. Next Wednesday I have my first lesson with a classical teacher. He'll probably adjust the action and make it higher, my bass originally had a jazz setup. I told him I want to learn proper classical double bass and...

    My Left Hand Problems

I have a couple of left hand issues that I'm sure people have dealt with. Any suggestions are welcome. My action is as low as I can get it on a precision. I'm wondering if they're all related. I squeeze the neck too tight. This makes shifting difficult and I get hand fatigue. I feel like I'm...

    Starting Out on Double Bass

I have played bass guitar for many years now as an amateur. Currently I'm in a couple of rock bands and also meet with some friends to play jazz standards. Currently I am focused on studying jazz harmony and improvisation on my electric bass. About 9 years ago I bought an Upright Bass, a 1988...

Double Bass Haven't Used Bass in Years … Setup? Strings?

Years ago I bought an upright bass, when I bought it I had the shop do a setup and put new strings on it. That was about 9 years ago. I played it for a few months and then it sat in the corner while I played electric. Lately I've thought about the upright bass so I took it out of the case ( bag...

    Left Hand Thumb Tightness

I've been playing for years but have some poor technique. One of them is that my left hand thumb is pressed hard against the back of the neck. My hand gets tired from this and it also slows down position changing. Should I be practicing without pressing my thumb against the back of the neck or...

    Travel Bass

Any business travelers out there? I have a big trip planned and would hate to not be able to practice for 2 months. In the future I may start traveling a lot, but not always long trips, probably days at a time. I have a cheap bass that I could bring, although I may end up spending as much on...

Trouble Reaching Top Frets on P-Bass

On the E string I cannot reach the highest 2 notes, B & C. I can sometimes reach Bb. I can barely reach those frets on my A string. Am I fretting ( pun intended ) over nothing? In reality I don't think I would need to play those notes on those strings.

    Looking for Less Papery Sound

I have a '62 Fender Precision Re-issue. I have been using Labella Deep Talkin' Flatwounds with the black tape. They sound great for R&B or rock. They sound pretty good if I'm walking. But where they seem to fall apart is if I'm soloing above the 12th fret. They sound papery to me. I'm working on...

Looking to Buy a Super Light Cabinet

It's not the best time for me to spend money on a cabinet but I hate carrying my Ampeg B-100R. I have a Dave LIne head and was thinking of buying a lightweight cabinet. I want something I can easily carry on the subway or in a cab. I visited a fairly well know guitar store and the salesman...

Distorted pop on low string/low frets

I recently started doing my own setup on my Fender P-bass, bought the Fender bass book, got info here, etc. It's mostly good. My intonation is excellent and tuning is a breeze. I keep my string height at the recommended values. I have a slight arch in my neck after doing a truss rod adjustment...

Foam Mute gives a Papery Sound on my P Bass

I recently did my own setup and overall I'm happy. But I installed a piece of foam, which is quite dense, under the bridge guard. I installed it very close to the bridge itself to reduce the effect it has on the intonation. But I am noticing a bit of a papery sound, especially on the higher...

    Performance Anxiety

No not that kind! I mean getting really nervous before a gig. Last night I played a gig and normally I'm a little nervous but okay. But for some reason my hands felt disconnected and tight. I have to still listen to the recording we got to see how I played, but I felt horrible. I did not...

Setup Book for P-Bass and tools

I am interested in doing my own setups. I did my first, which I need to adjust, but plan on continuing doing them. I would also like to do basic repairs if need be. My main bass is Fender P-bass. I would like to get a decent book for setup and repair. Stew-Mac has a book called "The Fender...

P-Bass: Why is thumb rest below strings?

I know it's just this way on P-basses, but I own a P-bass so I care mostly about that. To me it seems that the thumb rest would be useful if I could use my thumb to stabilize my hand while plucking with my fingers. So why is it below the strings?

    My First String Change

After many years of playing bass I finally did my first string change and I'm not sure if I have an intonation problem. I have a Fender Precision re-issue. The last time I had it professionally setup I had him set the string height a little high, 9/64" on the E string. I am using the Peterson...

Double Bass Playing Upright in an Apartment

I haven't played my upright for years but I'm thinking of picking it up again. I'm also moving into a new apartment and don't want to annoy my new neighbors especially since it is a coop. Does anyone have any advise on how to keep the sound level from reaching my neighbors? The walls are...
