Learn a lot of songs or master a few??

When it comes to vocabulary we always hear to learn songs or transcribe. I wonder what's the most efficient way to increase vocabulary. Of course over time your list of known songs increases but what are you focusing on right now? Do you focus on volume as far as transcribing as many as you can...

How to find good balance of Mid and lows?

My main genre of music that I play is gospel and worship. With a lot of instrumentation the mid level is pretty important to me but how can I tell if I have too much mids? I usually boost the mids on my bass about halfway with my mid switch at 250hz. My bass I boost to about 2 or 3 oclock. There...

    Relearning fretboard after dowtuning?

I'm testing out downtuning my 5 string to Ab but didn't realize just how much I'm about patterns when it comes to where the notes are. What's a good way to change perception of the fretboard?

Using things learned transcribing in other songs.....

How do you guys approach doing this? I know for a lot of people (including me) we can play a bassline including all the fills and dynamics but when it comes to putting those ideas into other songs, we can't do it. How do you approach doing this?

    Play what you sing?

I talked to a bass player and he told me when it comes to improvising, fills, etc that it's better to play what I sing in my head. Instead of playing a pattern and then deciding if I like it or not. Do some of you approach your playing that way? If so do you learn the basic progression and then...

    Gospel Bassist Morgan Turner

One of my favorite clips from Morgan Turner on bass. Despite the nasty fills he is known for I like his placement using alternate bass notes. Check 2:20 in the video, gives you the chills. Look at the big guy's face when he hits that note lol. I think Sharay Reed was on the original of this song.

What do YOU mean when you say a bassist is "technical"?

im curious to see what people mean by describing a bassist with this term. I know some gospel guys are described as technical but to me they all groove. Example, I've heard people describe Andrew gouche as technical and working through a lot of his fills, I found that A LOT of them are...

What's the worst that could happen replacing a bridge?

Now mind you, I haven't done much work on my basses before but I'm thinking about replacing a bridge on my Ibanez sr505 that's bent now. What's the worst that could happen while trying to replace it on my own? It would be the same style bridge just a new one.

Ibanez SR505 Strings Coming Out Of Bridge

Hey guys, Recently I've had an issue with my G and D string popping out of the bridge for no reason at all. So I looked to see the best way to string this bass. Looking at the bridge from the back/bottom of it, the balls of the strings don't even look secure in general. For those that have...

How many songs to transcribe at once?

how many songs do you guys try to transcribe at once? I'm wondering if it's more productive to focus on one till I nail it completely or try a few at a time and split practice time between them until I get one of them down. What do you think?

Why are drummers the usual suspect for band problems?

I dont know about you all but it seems like almost every band I've been in (even in church) the drummers are usually the most unreliable of the band. Skipping practice, not showing up for events, etc...or is that just me??lol

Difficult for me to keep wrist straight while playing....

I don't know about you guys but it's really hard for me to not bend my plucking hand wrist while I am playing. I've tried raising my shoulder and keeping the wrist as straight as I can but that wears my shoulder out fast doing multiple songs. The most comfortable for me is to relax my upper...

Gospel players need your help with chord licks!

For the life of me I still can't figure out that popular chord lick pretty much all the gospel guys do. Can anybody explain it or how to place it in a song? Sounds so good when things get hype. Listen to this as an example at about 2:03. This is Darrell Freeman on this one and he does this...

    Darrell Freeman (Gospel) transcriptions??

For those that are into gospel, he's probably my favorite player. Trying to transcribe his lines might be one of the most difficult things I've done so far because he's pretty busy. Anybody ever tried to play some of his stuff?

You play closer to the bridge or the neck?

I'm always curious to see what other players prefer with this. Naturally, it seems like my hand just feels more comfortable when I play closer to the neck pickup and I like a warm sound. But I notice A LOT of people play closer to the bridge. Why is that?

Ibanez SR505 for worship and gospel?

As far as tone (especially mids and a good low end) anybody used this bass in church and happy with it? I don't have MTD money, nor Callowhill money, Ken Smith money, etc. I tested it out and I REALLY like it but of course playing live with many other instruments is a whole diff thing. Let me...

Best DR strings for deep lows on 5 string?

Sup everybody this is my first post but I've been playing in church for over a year now. Still a newbie on a budget so I have a Sub Series Ray5 bass. I really like the punch it has but I have used flatwounds almost exclusively. I'm about to get some adjustments done to it and want to try some...
