Double Bass Hybrid or Laminate bass for my jazz bass

Absolutely I am. I've actually got gut strings on it right now (Lenzner) and it's playing really, really well. The action is great, it's loud, dark, but fairly rough-sounding and kind of two-dimensional. Certainly not as subtle as my carved basses. Still, for jazz and bluegrass, it's fantastic!

    Double Bass It's official, I'm a doubler.

I have two Shen basses: A carved "Strelau" model (no longer made), and a plywood SB-88. both great basses, even with their "quirks". Neither is my main bass, but they're great instruments. Especially the hybrids I've played at shops lately. Congrats and have fun!

Double Bass Double Bass Players Wearing Wedding Band (DB FORUM THREAD)

Congratulations to you too, isolated! Yeah, nobody outright asked me, but they asked my wife "did he get confused about which hand to give you during the ceremony?" Oh well. This is how they do it in Scandinavia. Consequently, we took on a new family name, Svensen (a name from my family's...

Thanks! My wife gets more questions about the right-hand thing than I do.

Double Bass Double Bass Players Wearing Wedding Band (DB FORUM THREAD)

Well, I got married last weekend and I remembered this thread. My solution was to just wear it on my right hand. After trying and trying with a sterling silver "stunt ring" that was the same size, I couldn't get used to it. Here's what it looks like!

For Sale Oliv G string, used $55

Oliv G string for sale: $55 shipped. Bought second hand, put it on my bass for a couple weeks and found it to not be my flavor. There are a few places where the winding separates. Pic attached. This is a good string to get an idea of a gut G at less than half the cost of a new one. Paypal...

Double Bass Any Jazz bassists trading in their carved basses for plywood?

Every time it happens it's frustrating, but the last time somebody bumped my carved Shen on a gig (a guitar player swung around to put her guitar in its stand and her strap whacked the top of my bass) I got so upset I couldn't concentrate on the music. That was the deciding moment. It's also a...

Double Bass Any Jazz bassists trading in their carved basses for plywood?

All of my instruments are insured, and of course your preference is your preference. Since my classical sound is much more important to me than my jazz sound, I decided to get a ply bass with a less complex sound. On the flip side, I also get more volume and projection, so it has its benefits...

Double Bass Any Jazz bassists trading in their carved basses for plywood?

I'm on my fourth bass (if you count my crappy middle school bass). Here they are, in chronological order, and why I bought them. I hope this gives you some insight into my motives, and maybe helps lean you in one direction or the other. Palatino Ply: GARBAGE. Donated it to somebody or other...

Ended up buying a Shen SB88 from Mark Leue. He really took good care of me. Thanks for your help guys, I'm closing the thread!

Double Bass Hybrid or Laminate bass for my jazz bass

Hey everybody, After much thought and consideration, I decided that a laminate bass was exactly what I needed. I played several laminates, hybrids, old and new, and some carved basses (for fun) at Mark Leue's shop in western Massachusetts. I ended up taking home a new Shen SB88. Mark really...

Double Bass Hybrid or Laminate bass for my jazz bass

Ha! Perfect. Yeah, that's just about what I'm looking for. Thanks for the advice! Like I said above, I'm no bass-abuser or rockabilly player, but you just never know if some sax player (and their sharp keys and levers) will swing the wrong way... John, we've spoken on the phone before, I think...

Double Bass Hybrid or Laminate bass for my jazz bass

Thought I have to say, the worst offender for damage to my bass was a drummer, and the latest offender was a guitar player, so you can't even count on other musicians to not be morons. It's insanely frustrating.

Double Bass Hybrid or Laminate bass for my jazz bass

Neal - that's good advice. I do like to play my Shen for jazz, and it's done quite well. Got a great sound, and responds easily. I can still fall back to that bass when I feel safe and want a more complex sound, but can default to a ply instrument for the rest of the "working" gigs (bar gigs...

Double Bass Hybrid or Laminate bass for my jazz bass

Since I've had my Shen Willow I haven't had so much as an open seem (except for that one time I fell down the stairs with it). Since that incident it's seen dry and cold, hot and humid and also hasn't budged. Still, I don't feel great about taking it to outdoor gigs or touring with it. Just...

Double Bass Hybrid or Laminate bass for my jazz bass

Even with a laminate? The whole point of this bass is so that I can not care about it as much. I know that's rough for those of us who love our basses (I love both of mine), but to me it's necessary at this point. I'd rather buy a cheaper bass for these gigs than risk my beautiful old orchestra...

Double Bass Hybrid or Laminate bass for my jazz bass

I do have a Palatino EUB, but I hate the thing. It sounds and plays great, but I hate not having a real bass leaning against me. It just throws off my whole feel, even with the body shape bar. Just a personal preference thing.

Double Bass Hybrid or Laminate bass for my jazz bass

Hey mdcbass, I'd really never leave in the car - it's just an example of a less-than-ideal situation. More likely I should have said "something I could leave in a musical theater pit with no climate control for a week" or something like that. I did see your classified posting - It's in a...

    WTB Feeler Hybrid/Ply Bass < $3K

Hey, Thanks KungFu, but I'm actually looking for a beater bass. I'd be too worried about a carved instrument, and I want something to play at bars. Strange as it is to say, your Shen Rogeri is too nice for this! Besides, it's probably comparable to my Shen "Strelau", which serves another...

Double Bass Hybrid or Laminate bass for my jazz bass

I'm a classical and jazz player with two nice, carved basses - a beautiful old Tyrol bass and a Shen "Strelau" - and I'm sick of my carved basses getting bumped and dinged at jazz gigs. I want a bass that plays and amplifies well (maybe is loud enough to not amplify in some groups), but I won't...

Double Bass Oiling your Fingerboard (Olive Oil)

Agreed with all of the above from Drurb. Reputable luthiers are NOT the guy in the back at Guitar Center, or some guy manning a router machine at the Fender factory. Looks like a reputable luthier has chimed in! Thanks Arnold! As for me, I'll keep my mouth shut when I see the C.G. Testore...

Double Bass Impressions (of gut strings)

Sasha, They're great for jazz. The more they break in, the more core they have to their sound. Very authentic sound. They are pretty quick for how thick they are, but I have no other gut experience to compare. Very, very easy to pizz. I find that when I play faster runs I get a Lafaro-esque...

Double Bass Impressions (of gut strings)

I just got a set of Lenzner "Classic" gut - wound E/A, plain D/G - and I'm wondering how long these will take to break in for bowing. They're pretty rough and scratchy now, but I've been told that they take time and patience. I also resurrected this thread for the purpose of rejuvenating the...
