Double Bass It's official, I'm a doubler.

Ok, more accurately, I'm an electric bass player who now owns an upright bass ;)

After much trolling on TB and playing what was available locally, I made the trek to Cincinnati Bass Cellar (from Indianapolis) on Saturday. I had every intention of purchasing a plywood instrument. Somehow I walked out with a hybrid...a Shen SB150, specifically. I love it! The only reason I'm typing this instead of playing right now is the blister I've developed on my right index finger ;)

Also, can't say enough good things about the folks at CBC. I had a wonderful experience with them...Andy in particular. He patiently answered all my noob questions with a smile, even though he knew I wasn't there to spend $20k.

Anyway, I'm super excited and proud to own this awesome instrument!

Congratulations! The SB150 is a very nice bass. If you don't already have one, it is advisable to take at least a few lessons from a classical bass teacher. Maybe one of the members of the Indianapolis Symphony teaches beginner lessons, or maybe you can find a good jazz player with a classical background who teaches. While there are similarities, the double bass is really a very different instrument than the bass guitar. Some of the habits you may have developed on the BG don't apply well to the DB or can even cause injuries. You will enjoy playing the DB more if you know at least the basics. Have fun!

Congrats! I think you made a great choice in the Shen. I've had an SB200 for a year and a half, and absolutely no regrets. I would second Robgrow's suggestion on getting at least a few lessons with an experienced instructor. Hope to hear from you on this side of TB to let us know how things are going!

Thanks all! I do plan on taking a few lessons. Although i don't know any of the symphony bass players, i am blessed to know people who know people! I know there are plenty of options around town. I was so excited to take that photo with my new bass that i forgot to extend the end pin....it is now properly extended ;)

Congratulations!

I rented an SB 150 for a few months, once; I wish I owned one! I can't think of any other bass in that price range that I like as much...it does everything well.

A nice, even, dependable instrument, with a good sound, for not a lot of money...

I wish I owned one as a "second" bass...
