    Flamboyant Fretless

I like Jaco just fine and think he was a pioneer and a monster player, but I think Steve Bailey has surpassed him. I've seen Steve live a few times and the guy simply is a master on the fretless.

How to under stand Dominant 7, Minor 7, Major 7 scales?

THIS is my response, also. Not just for bass, but for guitar too. Toss in some chromatics to connect the arps an you are off and running. Play through a few tunes without time to get the moves down. You will see repeating phrases because of the ii V I progression. After you can play'em...

While I will bow to Mr. Fuqua's ability, knowledge and expertise, I've used Ed Friedland's Building Walking Basslines with dozens of students over the years, and always to a good result.

List of Jazz standards in various styles to assist learning?

I agree, good selections. Toss in All The Things you are, and a minor ballad like Alone Together, something in 3 like Bluesette, a bossa like Blue Bossa or Corcovado. Take 5 for the obvious is a hoot to play, and toss in a Monk tune like Straight No Chaser, and you've got a pretty good cross...

    Stepping up my teaching game

Great post, Ed. Occasionally I get guys, who are in high stress professions like medicine or law, who just want to learn jazz for the mental challenge of it. They put in some fretboard time, but don't really have the time to devote to such a demanding pursuit. This would fall into the...

    Stepping up my teaching game

Strength, flexibility and dexterity drills are always a part of whatever content I'm teaching. I use Jody Fisher's 30 Day Workout. Designed for guitar but great for bass, also. Basic, intermediate and advanced theory using music students like. Circle of 4ths, major scale theory, triads, 7th...

    Arpeggios Practice Book

I was taught to recite major scales, major and minor triads and all 5 7th chords/arpeggios around the key circle and do it under a minute. Otherwise, if you can't pull up each of those chord tones quickly the chord of the moment has passed you by and the band is on to the next one. Writing...

    angular bass lines?

If we connected the dots of vocal melody lines or melodic basslines on a page, they would mostly resemble waves. Angular lines are going to have larger intervallic leaps and feature more uncommon intervals. So if I were wanting to work out angular lines, I would think in terms of intervals...

    Finding An Instructor

Yeah, but there's a Skype app for android phones and tablets, and iPads, so the OP can still do Skype lessons. I studied jazz with a world class player across the country in NYC for a year. He captured our lessons and either emailed them via heavymail or burned to disc and mailed them for an...

A discussion on feet, and how you use yours.

Yep, me too. Jazz emphasizes the 2 & 4. I've been told to count there for years. Frankly, I feel my whole body becomes a metronome when playing bass. I have to move to all four (or three) beats. Can't help it. Not the same when I play guitar. Odd.

    No one ever told me...

I play just for fun, too. However, I find it fun to keep growing as a musician and learning more and more about the possibilities under my fingers. One of the things I do with both guitar and bass students is to take their well worn pentatonic scales and replace a note with one of the modal...

Advice on giving lessons, lesson plans etc

I am a big fan of having a method, but letting the student pick tunes. Now they often pick tunes that are above their head at first, but it is not a tough thing to find examples that will work with their level. Good luck with it.

    Composing in melodic minor

Borrowing chords between the modes of other scales (major, melodic minor, harmonic minor) is referred to as modal interchange. You can borrow at will, and this is frequently done in jazz. It is a cool way to take a tired or well known chord progression and spice it up. Certainly these...

Ed Freidland's Building Walking Basslines. He uses the blues as criteria for most of the book, and walking lines is useful in most all genres. http://www.amazon.com/Building-Walking-Bass-Lines-Instruction/dp/0793542049/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1276703750&sr=1-1

    Practice w/o a bass?

Learn and recite all the notes in each key, around the key circle. Learn and recite all the notes in major and minor triads around the key circle. I was at a jazz camp for a week a few summers ago, and was required to do it in less than a minute (notes in each key). Having this knowledge...

Best way to memorize key signatures?

I was required to memorize them around the circle in 4ths, since the instrument is tuned in 4ths. Pretty simple really. Start with C (no #'s or b's), and as you go around you add a b to the 4th note in the scale until you get to the bottom. Going to B, they are all #'s, except the 4th...

Picking up Bass... 4 or 5?

As a guitarist who has played bass off and on for many years, I think it is easier at first to stick with a 4. You don't have to think about the fretboard, and can instead just worry about thinking/playing like a bass player. I have played 5 some, but have always gone back to a 4. I like 5...

    II-V-I explain to a newbie

The V to I cadence is the strongest in western music, because the V is the furthest from the I, thereby creating the most tension. Most western music is about creating and resolving tension. If we look at a ii V I in C, Dmin7 is the ii, G7 is V, Cmaj7 is I. But D is also the V of G. So...

    Supporting a Vocalist

I regularly play with a female singer who will unwittingly change the arrangement we worked on in rehearsal during the performance. Shortened solos by a few bars by coming in with the vocal too soon, shaving off a chorus, etc. Just have to be listening so we can, as a group, follow her...
