Girl Bass Player Club, part 2

By design, basses aren't really made with girls in mind; they are generally pretty big and heavy. The best basses I have found are the Ibanez SR series, which have a lighter body and a thinner and more comfortable neck. Also the body shape seems to fit more comfortably around the various female...

    Top Ten Female Bass Players.......?????

Ok, so I'm a female bassist; not in a band but I have had a few offers based on my playing ability. Oddly though, the offers are generally withdrawn when they discover that I'm a woman. The best excuse I got was 'I'm fine with it but the other guy's wives aren't happy about a girl in the band'...

    Tony Orlando and Dawn

Yeah I know, real lightweight 70's pop (or is it pap?), but listen closely to those old 70's bubblegum hits and you'll discover some brilliantly imaginative and tuneful bass lines. As a sort of hobby, I like to learn these songs and put videos of myself playing them up on Youtube; you'd be...

    The Four Most Influential Bassists?

It just occurred to me....is Bernard Edwards on anyone's list? His bass line in Chic's 'Good Times' has to be one of the most influential ever. Also, he was just a musical genius.

    Bass Lines I Can't Play ...

I can play the notes for 'I want you back', but I struggle at the native tempo; and then it changes for the little instrumental break and I lose it completely. I can't figure out how anyone can play 'hit me with your rhythm stick', it's just so fast. The original line was played by Norman Watt-...

    Bass Lines I Can't Play ...

My mistake; don't know why I thought Babbitt played on Sir Duke. It's true that Motown does seem to proliferate here; I think that just shows how fabulously talented those guys were. So clever and innovative. I am totally in awe of people who can do what they did.

    Bass Lines I Can't Play ...

Sir Duke! That's an unbelievably complicated.... Another of Babbitt's bass lines I think! Whilst I think of it, Stevie Wonder's 'For Once In My Life' is another that I would love to play buteo ably never will.

    Bass Lines I Can't Play ...

There are LOTS, but there are some amazingly brilliant bass lines that I so want to be able to play, but just can't because they are too difficult for me. 1. I Got A Name - Jim Croce ( bass played by Bob Babitt) 2. Hold On - Ian Gomm ( bass played by Herbie Flowers) 3. I Want You Back - The...

If you have no music room, where does your gear live?

Oh to be an American! I love all this talk of 'Basements', 'Garages' and 'Trucks'; it all sounds so wonderfully cosmopolitan.

If you have no music room, where does your gear live?

I work from home, so my amp and 3 basses all live in my office. It's kinda nice to stop work at a moments notice, spin round in my chair and grab a bass when the mood takes me.

    The Four Most Influential Bassists?

Since nobody else had done it, I would also like to mention Herbie Flowers and Pino Palladino.

    Wow, fretless experience

I agree Mike, no lines or markers is a step too far! I bought a really cheap Stagg fretless and then sold it after only a few months because it was rubbish AND because it had no lines. It's replacement, an Ibanez SR300 DXF has lines and a much nicer sound.

    Wow, fretless experience

Thanks, Godofthunder (or may I just call you God?), I know what you mean about the floaty thumb thing; truth is I just never know what to do with it. I really envy you your place in a real rock band, I would love to find other people to play with. Glad you liked my playing too BH2, I find I'm...

sciatica pain..... in a younger person?

Ok my guess is that you probably have a prolapse disc; I got one of those as well and at its worst it causes irritation of the sciatic nerve. It also causes pain in my hip joint and then radiates down my leg, it's a miserable and insidious pain. Basically I have a disc that bulges out from...

    Wow, fretless experience

Update: I sold the fretless bass that I bought a while back because it really wasn't working for me and to be honest it was rubbish anyway. I put the proceeds towards a fretless Ibanez SR 300, same model and my fretted bass, so they're like matching twins:) Anyway, this bass has fret lines on...

Have you ever been laughed at for playing a cheap bass

Forgive me if this has already been said, but I can't read thru all of the previous 376 posts.... Converse to the issue of 'gear snobbery' is assumption that a musician must be really good just because he / she is playing something with a 'name' on it! Would you automatically assume that a...

    Wow, fretless experience

Having spent a few hours on it today already I'm starting to warm to it a bit. But I keep coming back to the opening note on Wherever I Lay My Hat, which for me is the definitive 'fretless song'. I get your point though, I can see how fretless will work for pretty much anything, so maybe the...

    Wow, fretless experience

I know! She's amazing, and oddly she said the same about me after seeing some of my stuff, but objectively speaking she is 1000 times more accomplished than I am. Having just taken delivery of my first ever fretless today, I am now looking at fretless bass songs to have a stab at. Current...

    Wow, fretless experience

OK guys, I have taken the plunge and bought a fretless bass. I only got a cheap one for now because I want to see if I can play it at all before investing in something more 'up-market' (it's a Stagg, don't laugh!!). It doesn't have fret markers , so I'm thinking of either drawing the frets on...

    Wow, fretless experience

I have never tried a fretless bass, and until recently never thought I would want to; I've always believed that its far too difficult and 'weird'. However, having seenInvalid Link Removed play her fretless bass, I really reeely want to try now :)

    I can't get into Jaco

Perhaps if I had witnessed Jaco at first hand I might feel differently about him now, I don't know. I once had the delight of standing about 8 feet away from Mark King during a gig at the Town and Country in London. It's a pretty small venue and I was close enough to see the little beads of...

Who’s In between Bands and Scouting

Marc Bolan and Freddie Mercury were serious musicians as well, but they also managed to inject some fun and showmanship into their performances. If there's one thing I really dislike in music, its those self-indulgent 'musos' who put their audience second and themselves first. If you aren't...

    Bands that singers ruin...

I kinda knew that my comment would be controversial (not my intention, I assure you!), because I know Crissy Hynde is huge and she was a big part of the '80's. I have often wished that I liked her voice because I really want to, but I just don't; she doesn't do it for me. However as I said...

Who’s In between Bands and Scouting

Aah yeah there is always that. I really don't want a microphone in my face; I have a terrible voice anyway but I find that trying to sing while playing breaks my concentration and it affects my playing. I would prefer to just stand at the back and play the bass; Just put me near enough to the...

Who’s In between Bands and Scouting

I'm a 52 year old woman, and whilst I'm a pretty competent bass player, I rather doubt that anyone would want me in their band. I guess its an image thing; most bands seem to comprise men aged between 18 and 40 (although they might have a female vocalist) , so I'm way outside the right...

What bass would you like to try out but can't where you are?

Got to be a Rickenbacker for me! I was at a pub gig the other night and was drooling over the bassist's jetglo 4003; after the gig he jumped off the stage and bought the guitar over to me for a closer look! Its a little heavier than I expected, but beautifully balanced and has a really slender...

    Bands that singers ruin...

I would have to say The Pretenders. Listen to the instrumentation on any of their records and its superb....and then Crissy Hynde starts whining and sneering into the microphone and wrecks the whole thing. I will probably be deeply un-popular for saying that, but hey-ho....that's my two cents...

    Ibanez BTB questions

Hi Wallace320 Thanks so much for this info; I'm really thinking that this isn't what I thought it was when I bought it now. There is nothing on the back of the headstock other than a serial number and the words 'Made in Korea' - I also have an Ibanez SR series bass, which is more like you...

    Ibanez BTB questions

I have recently acquired an Ibanez BTB700 which isn't quite as I expected it to be - its probably my own fault because it was an Ebay purchase, but hey-ho, I've got it now! Anyway, my first question is that other than a small BTB logo on the headstock, there are no identifying marks on it so...

    A total 'newbie' !

Hi all, I'm new here, so I thought I should make myself known rather than just 'lurk'. I found this place by chance recently by doing various Google searches, all of which presented 'Talkbass.com' in the search results. I'm not in a band or anything, but play a bit of bass for my own...
