I can't get into Jaco

I felt that way... Until I picked up a fretless bass, and started taking lessons. I only got the fretless to get an upright tone, but my fretless teacher asked me to listen to some Jaco. Jaco really inspired me. He showed me what I could do on a fretless that I couldn't do on a fretted. At first I listened to study, and then all of a sudden it hit me. He was an awesome player. I started liking his music, to loving his tone. I soon strung compression rounds on my fretless, and soon after, he fell into my top 3.

I really admire how Jaco shook up the bass world in the 70's. Yes, we have the victor wootens, the Brian Brombergs, and Alain Caron's today. But considering jaco was playing fretless, lyrical lead bass, with harmonics, artificial harmonics, double stops, etc... and chords, with staggering fluidity, and doing this in the 70's, that's really what makes him remarkable IMO. Nobody was doing that stuff on bass before jaco came along. He really took bass playing to another level, just like Vic and others have done in the past couple of decades. He was a true pioneer of the electric bass( so was Stanley) but that's another story...:)

We are into McCartney, Jamerson and others who know how to groove, play with the the singer, serve the song and the band. I am from S. Fla. Jaco sat in with our band in the 80's. He was too busy show boating and playing lead bass. He didn't play anything that had to do with what the band was playing.

Fine I'll say it...I'm not into Jaco (or should say not that much) but dig Jonas Hellborg.

I feel like people throw stones around here if you say you not into the dude.

im one of those cats and my musical tastes mostly align with post-metal, post-rock, sludge, and noise experimentation (i.e. cult of luna, intronaut, russian circles, godspeed you black emperor, guapo, dragged into sunlight, cynic, sunno))), old man gloom, aethenor, etc).

its not that i dont see the talent - i really do! but between the noodling and that bass tone i cant take it. ive tried a good 10 times to "get it" and my ears just get agitated. dude was a monster though. i also cant listen to wooten or anyone like that so maybe im just not into noodling?
