With the likes of Patrick O'Hearn, Tom Fowler, Chris Squier that Jaco guy, and others from that decade. With my little kid money I bought a MXR M117 Flanger…

I'm listening to Holy Hour. Smith's music, at that time, was very cyclical. It didn't feel like verse-chorus-verse-chorus... It spiralled around itself, building tension and releasing it in waves.
Flanger is the perfect addition.

I recently picked up a big box Electric Mistress that completes my Big 3 of "EHX Big Boxes" with the other 2 being the Deluxe Memory Man and POG. I'm starting to like Flange more and more. The only flanger currently on my board is a Walrus Audio Polychrome.

Don't know as this is the only one I have. Wait I just remembered I think I have some sort of Behringer Flanger.
Nope it's a Chorus pedal. I also have one of those Zoom multi effects pedals. I'll dig around in that and see if there is some sort of Boss alike thing in there

Here is a quick example of Flanger on my bass.
Flanger is a chocolate coloured late 80's Boss BF-2B which I use extensively in many songs onstage.
Bass guitar is a 1991 5-string Peavey Dyna Bass.
Song is Michael Buble's Everything, which demonstrates a pretty good example of the bass flanger.
A quick note on my recording...it was done 16 years ago (along with 300 more songs loll) when my fiance was living in the UK and before she moved to Australia to marry me and live here. I emailed groups of my recording to her to listen to at the time.
She is partially deaf in both ears and wears hearing aids and requested my bass playing to be louder than the songs..so that explains the excess bass volume...it is still a good example of Bass Flanger though.

Love the sound of this flanger. It sounds more organic than mine.

And btw: bass should always be louder!

I love my AP/A PBF flanger. I've also tried the BF-2 but much prefer the AD/A on my bass board - it's much thicker and cuts really well in a mix with a bit of OD behind it. My BF-2 is sitting on my geetar board in the chorus position where it does anyone admirable job.

Hey there DJ! Better hang on to that vintage MXR 117 Flanger! Why? Because it's equipped with the now unobtainium and highly desirable Reticon SAD1024 chip. Nothing sounds quite like a flanger that has that chip in it! Those chips have been out of production since 1979 when Reticon went out of business.

Hey there DJ! Better hang on to that vintage MXR 117 Flanger! Why? Because it's equipped with the now unobtainium and highly desirable Reticon SAD1024 chip. Nothing sounds quite like a flanger that has that chip in it! Those chips have been out of production since 1979 when Reticon went out of business.

What makes the Reticon SAD1024A special is that it is able to be clocked higher than most other bucket brigade devices, allowing flangers to sweep up into the nether regions where the notches almost disappear, then back down to the bottom of the range. The A/DA Flanger is one of the best for taking advantage of that huge sweep range (a more pedestrian flanger like the BF-2 cannot sweep nearly as high, topping out in the upper midrange, giving it a narrower sweep). It also has better frequency response than most BBDs, which can make it a bit clearer in the highs, depending on the filtering employed. However, for a chorus or delay pedal, where longer delay times are used, the LPF is steeper, other BBDs are a better, more economical, choice.
