    Q the EQ

I like to boost C in every octave, because it's more musical. Especially when I'm playing in the key of Db

Realbook.site - Free and transposable sheet music

Cool, what's the catch? 😜 Oh I see, it's only free to view, not print or download. Still cool. And I suspect like most fake/real sheets it's caveat emptor. Always some interesting chords here and there, not necessarily like the official published versions or even the old records. And then some...

NBD! This [REDACTED] is the best sounding bass I have ever heard!

I like good things; they're better than bad things

Theme park, huh? Well, how come I didn’t get a funnel cake last time I was in?

I don't know any adults who are into theme parks (I know they exist; I just don't know any). And if you've ever worked in a music store, the last thing you want to do is hang out in one.

    Fun Idea!

How about "put out a fire in the band van in the middle of the third set while the rest of the band continued, then went back in and finished the set" Or "received a book of Melville poetry from an intoxicated woman who had just stripped down to lingerie, with a picture of her dead son tucked...

    Vulfpeck doesn't rehearse

Band nerds practice their butts off and don't take chances IME. That's how they get into Berklee, where they clinically dissect Black American music and form really tight bands. Why rehearse when each player knows exactly the notes they're gonna play and exactly how they're gonna play em?

When Do You Think You Are Overplaying?

If you can't hear all the parts everybody is playing, you're probably overplaying (or just too loud). Ensemble playing is all about listening. As you get better you can pull off more complicated stuff, but you'll place it better. For example playing a complex fill, but not at the same time as...

    Hopefully this one works out

It's always gonna be hit or miss buying an instrument without being able to play it first. I bought a used bass from GC once, and it worked out ok. I bought a new bass from MF; that turned out great.

    that first ding

Meh, who cares. It's a tool, it gets used, it's gonna get some wear and tear.

    Markings for fretless

I've long preferred blank with side dots for both fretless BG and DB, but my Ibanez is blank face with side dots and lines. It took some getting used to since the dots are in the "wrong" place, but it's actually quite nice up high where it's fiddly.
  13. Pings Bass

    NBD didn't work out

I've got two "vintage" basses I bought new. It's kind of wild that the 1985 is closer to WWII than today, but here we are. The only way to avoid this jarring reality is to only buy stuff built before you were born. Or trade in for a new bass every two years. Or die young.

Viral Amish singing duo Ben & Rose draw sold-out crowd from across the world

I used to see lots of Amish folks in the audience at bluegrass festivals in rural Southeast Iowa. FYI some Amish communities use electricity, gasoline engines, and rubber tires while others still use horse and buggy. It's all up to the local elders and what they mutually decide is good for...

Double Bass Advice on buying, please

West Music in Coralville might have something, but a half size that can be heard above a hammered dulcimer is a tall order. Good luck!

    Official GR Bass Club

I've been using mine on gigs without this issue, but I'm in an all acoustic act and the only amp on stage. I could definitely see it walking if I cranked it a little bit. Happy to not need it cranked.

    Making it work

I have one bass for Americana, one for jazz and one for Latin It's the same bass 😜
  18. Pings Bass

    Favorite pickup configuration?

It matters less than I used to think, but the split-coil barts in my Ibanez sure get the job done. But I'm fine with P, PJ, JJ, M, MM, whatever. My old L2K sure had a lot of juice.
  19. Pings Bass

Do the physics of low end impact your performance?

Live is hard, period. I've long been over thinking my instrument has to sound a certain way, but I absolutely have to be able to hear myself without digging in (I play upright and fretless, so this is not negotiable). Proper amp placement is key for this, and then it's just a matter of making...

    All that Carbon Fiber

I just played my 3rd gig with my new GR active 12 cab. I walked a block from my car to the venue with my upright and rig in one trip. It does the job with no issues and sounds clean and transparent. My only concerns are dropping it, it vibrating off a stand, or something falling on it. I really...

40th Anniversary Jazz (Squier) vs Fender MIM

Only to brand-conscious consumers. Players know that Squiers can play, sound and look great, and nobody in the audience can read the headstock anyway. If the neck is good and you like the way it plays, save your money. If you've got money to burn, buy whatever you like.

Do single cut basses are exclusive for pros?

Single cuts and spalting had their day and have trickled down the the masses. Grab one if you like the aesthetic. If you gig with it nobody will notice or care except maybe another bassist, and they'll know from the headstock logo you're not putting on airs.

    Official GR Bass Club

GR speakers will be fine within their rated capacity and sensible use, but "pounding" makes me think of overpowering. I'm curious how you blew up the TE speakers. GR speakers can blow if their their mechanical or thermal limits are exceded, like any speakers.

Awful set list is better than not playing at all

Ensemble playing is important for many reasons, and often that means you have to compromise and play some stuff you don't enjoy. But if the whole set list is "ewww" I don't see the point unless you enjoy the people AND get paid a handsomely.

Is 87 vintage? Cuz my MiJ fender from that year is my best-build fender.

    Baritone uke tuning machine upgrade?

Yeah the pegs make it hard to nail the tuning. I don't think they slip though. I just put new strings on it so I'm tuning it constantly. Yeah, it's annoying! On the other hand I'm probably more annoyed by the lack of bass notes available and my inability to transpose on the fly like I can on a...

    Baritone uke tuning machine upgrade?

The uke was my mom's, which I never heard her play. I've owned enough Harmonys to know they're not worth anything and often not good looking enough to hang on the wall for decor 😜 This one is playable tho, and my partner just got a soprano, so I'm pulling it out of storage. I guess the...

Playing In Church vs Playing Elsewhere

My experience was playing in a combo accompanying a high school handbell choir. A handful of songs at a time, all with written parts and weeks of rehearsal before performing. Pretty easy and low pressure. Occasionally I'd get called to play with a regional handbell festival, which was zero...

Real amps are better than going straight to house

Eh, if I want to feel air move I'll stand in front of a fan. If I want to hear music, it's always a crapshoot if anybody is trying to carry the house with their stage rig.

NBD (sorta)! MIJ Fretless Jazz Bass Special!

same, same, same! Still got it, and never got around to filling the hole from the pickup switch. It's a great playing bass, especially if you like a slim, slim neck.

    Baritone uke tuning machine upgrade?

Hey all, I know this is a little off-topic, but is it worth upgrading an old 70s Harmony baritone uke to geared tuning machines, and if so, what kind and from where? Doesn't have to look great, just work better than the pegs currently on it. Seems like some inexpensive guitar tuners would make...

Have you spent more on gear than you've earned this year ?

Double Bass FDeck and Red Eye - UPDATE

Is this true tech? Or is it marketing? I don't understand how this matching would work, or what the benefit would be over any buffer with sufficiently high impedance to prevent loading. But anyway, So you don't need any kind of magic the red eye or any other buffering preamp might provide...

    MarkBass small size, huge sound

Double Bass The EUB "makes it look like you're doing something you're not."

I can't parse the sentiment without context, and I don't really care. EUB is an instrument that some people play. Some of my favorite Afro-Cuban and Latin jazz players have made careers worth of incredible music with them. And for the kind of music that's made with them, they are exactly the...
