18" woofer to replace 80s BW in Peavey 118D, as subby as possible

Noted! And the total 4" should include this 3/4" or so front baffle thickness I suppose, so the extension will only be about 2" or a little less

18" woofer to replace 80s BW in Peavey 118D, as subby as possible

True, luckily they did cancel it and refund, and a user here may be able to help me out with a good quality 2240 or 2241

18" woofer to replace 80s BW in Peavey 118D, as subby as possible

Welp, I should've asked yourall's advice before pulling the trigger :sorry: at least he did accept an offer much lower than the listed price.. I've messaged to ask if I can cancel the order, hopefully that works out. Currently I only have a 130 watt/side @ 4ohm (non-bridgeable) Peavey PV 260 amp...

The 2241 is bought and I'll get to work finding a piece of pipe! Will report back soon, appreciate all the advice

18" woofer to replace 80s BW in Peavey 118D, as subby as possible

There's one 6" diameter port in the lower right side now, and it extends about 1 3/8" back into the cab. Sounds like i may extend that one port to be about 4" long, and will put some 2" fiberglass insulation on the back and sides, then put a JBL 2241 i found on ebay in there (haven't bought...

18" woofer to replace 80s BW in Peavey 118D, as subby as possible

Appreciate the input! Does that mean I'd be best off adding a 4" port on the lower left in addition to the 6" port already there on the lower right, then adding a cardboard or PVC tube to each of those with total length of 4"-6" each?

18" woofer to replace 80s BW in Peavey 118D, as subby as possible

Ok great, so roughly 4" total length of cardboard or pvc pipe extending into the cab, measured from the inside wall? The existing piece goes about 1 3/8" in, so I guess just another 2.5" or so. Should anything else happen in there as far as insulation, dividers etc?

18" woofer to replace 80s BW in Peavey 118D, as subby as possible

Thank you x1000. What do you mean by "lengthen the duct"? As in a pipe would go into the box from the 6" port? Also do you know the name of the cab size application? I couldn't find it from searching but I know I've seen it on old posts before

18" woofer to replace 80s BW in Peavey 118D, as subby as possible

I want to push back a bit on everyone saying "wrong tool, get a true sub." My original question and one i would like a direct answer to is: could I improve the low end response of this cab with a different woofer and/or with internal insulation/dividers/different size port? If so would an...

18" woofer to replace 80s BW in Peavey 118D, as subby as possible

Sadly I'm across the country in Tennessee, wish I was in PNW though! Most likely ridiculously expensive to ship this across the country.. I'm thinking about selling the speaker alone for that reason, no idea what to do with the empty cab though

18" woofer to replace 80s BW in Peavey 118D, as subby as possible

I recently picked up an 80s/90s Peavey 118D 18" bass cab with model 1801 Black Widow speaker (I think it's sn 427731 fwiw) for $80, and I'm wondering if it's possible to get a much stronger reproduction of very low end than with the stock speaker and setup. I'm a noob when it comes to cab design...

Ampeg PF 20t not working, halp

For the sake of anyone who might come across this thread in the future with similar problems, thought I would update to say I finally sent it off and got it fixed by Lynn Rochester (Ampworks) near Greenville SC for $120. Working like a charm now, and I'll just post our email exchanges below for...

Ampeg PF 20t not working, halp

Belated update, but the previous "fix" was short lived unfortunately. Reseating the tubes caused the amp to work again for a week or so, but then went back to previous state (powers up, red led comes on, but won't exit standby and no sound passes). I got the deoxit d5 and microbrushes and...

Which EQD fuzz/OD for heavy/sludgy baritone with articulate high end?

Thanks yall, sounds like the cloven hoof's better low end is enough to recommend it over the hoof reaper? Tone reaper side isn't as crucial for the sound I'm after?

Which EQD fuzz/OD for heavy/sludgy baritone with articulate high end?

I looked at the monarch and found a couple used for around $100, I assumed it was more of a flavored boost and maybe similar to the cheap af Caline Orange Burst, very open to reconsidering. I have a DOD bifet boost that I haven't put into rotation yet fwiw

Which EQD fuzz/OD for heavy/sludgy baritone with articulate high end?

That's what I'm thinking, I already have a few Morley ABY pedals so was thinking of sending "guitar" freqs to fender twin (or possible monoprice 15w tube amp), med lows to Ampeg w/15" cabs, and possibly sub bass to a cheapish pre and SS power amp with 18" cabs. Would ideally have thick sludgy...

Which EQD fuzz/OD for heavy/sludgy baritone with articulate high end?

Thanks for helping to eliminate Spires at least! Don't think I'd have much use for octave up, just octave down really and I already have a meatbox and sub'n'up that I haven't put into rotation yet. From online vids Bit Commander sounds a little too crazy for what I'm trying to do, bigger chords...

You did break the first rule of the thread ;) but just watched Andy's demo (proguitarshop) and might just have to grab one of these too.. The GAS is strong with me right now re: various EQD pedals, but I'm getting a stress headache from trying to sort through all the damn options. For the love of god please don't suggest something non-EQD in this thread haha, head would then explode. For the record I'm also GASing over Team...

Ampeg PF 20t not working, halp

Hey all, for the record I very much respect and appreciate Agedhorse (Andy's) vast knowledge and experience, and looking out for people's safety. To me it was kind of like if an engineer that worked on a Cummins engine hung out on a Dodge forum and told a thrifty consumer to take it into a...

I'm guessing from your bio you're a full time technician and keen to protect your profession, which I totally understand. With that said, you should know this kind of thing comes off as condescending and makes people like me even less likely to use techs instead of self diagnosing. I'm fully...

Ampeg PF 20t not working, halp

I think I paid $400 for it used, I have to assume any tech bill for actual repair work would be around $300 so it's a bit tough to justify paying that vs selling for parts and buying another if it really was non-functional. Also I live in Jenkins KY, 2.5 hrs to Asheville NC, 4 hrs to Cincinnati...

10-4, will follow all that to a T. I don't mind a bit doing moderate maintenance; I'm happy to change my oil, fuel, and air filters but I'd rather not change a head gasket or mess with a transmission. This was made in China and the shipping conditions comment makes sense to me

Ampeg PF 20t not working, halp

Great, that's super helpful. Quick question, can I directly spray Deoxit D5 directly into the socket contact without removing them from the amp and then clean with interdental brushes, i.e. is it fine for the Deoxit to run down into the amp? Also I'm assuming "micro tight" like these on Amazon...

The only issue still in my mind is why the hell did this happen in the first place? I haven't been gigging at all, just working on new material by myself (i.e. amp hasn't been moved in months). I love the sound of the PF-20t and haven't heard of any other reliability issues, but it seems weird...

JimmyM for the win! Followed your/beans-n-toast's advice and pulled and reseated all the tubes, working like a charm now (LED does switch to purple when working properly btw), thank you sir. I just hope others searching forums on issues like this in the future see this and don't follow the...

Ampeg PF 20t not working, halp

Great, thanks for the input. Would it make sense for none of the tubes to glow if just one has gone bad? Also am I right in thinking a blown fuse wouldn't allow the amp to come on or front LED to glow? Finally, is running it low volume like I've been doing potentially bad for the amp or harder...

Ampeg PF 20t not working, halp

If the answer is "sounds like you should switch out your tubes" or "replace easily accessible transformer(s)" that's a pretty simple and non-dangerous fix I can do. I have no intention of getting into the PCB or messing with capacitors, if it's that bad I'll call it a loss and sell for parts...
