Reviving this thread... the worst of the issue is resolved in terms on the very dead tones, so some breaking in of the flats has helped, but the overtones are still totally out of control. On the e string, EVERY fret I press has the harmonic of the major third above it resonating strong. On...

Lol this is a good point, however the LaBellas seem good aside from the fact that I just don’t like the tone, but the dissonant overtones are not a problem with them. I’m starting to wonder about nickelwounds?

I have lowered the pickups as far as the instrument allows- there’s a piece of wood that runs along the face of the instrument from the tail to the bridge on which the pickups essentially rest, so they can’t drop anymore. Also, it’s producing these overtones just playing acoustically anyway...

Thanks for the replies Michael, a month sounds reasonable and worth the wait if they turn out okay. I did loosen the e string and let it sit, retightened it after a few minutes, but no luck. I suppose it’s a bit of a waiting game to see if these flats are simply not the flats for my bass.

I got the lights as well. The same notes on the A string do not cause the problem i.e. tenth fret E sounds awful, 5th fret A sounds fine. I’m afraid flats simply may not work for the bass? I’d hate to give up on them if a proper breaking in will solve the problem because I do love the way they...
