Favorite pickup for single pickup bass guitar

I quite like a J bridge pickup pushed back into more of a Stingray or Rickenbacker position. But arguably you are better off with some sort of dual coil in that sweet spot position, so you can series/parallel/spit for more options.

As far as I denos go, I find this one kind of helpful, comparing the Wilde PJ set to Geezer Butler, Area and EMG active PJ sets to have some other popular models as references: It's not nessecarily the most wow one in terms of playing or tones but of gives you a bass point of comparison.

    D Standard Club (DGCF)

So the PW's were a success, but sometimes I want brighter strings and I'm 5/6 string curious but don't care about low B, so a D standard-ized version would be interesting. I like my DR High Beams and those and their Low Riders seem to have single "C" strings in 25 and 35 so I got a few questions...

I didn't want to buy 27 Jazz Bass pickups so I simulated them.

Seems like it could be great for looking up specs for other pickups too. Does it work for Dual Coil pickups or sidewinders?

Series/Parallel sounds like it's worth trying, although I'll have to swap out the preamp anyway to do wiring mods since everything but the blend is connected to the preamp circuitboard

For the P46 and J45 users that pair them as preamps, what preamps do you use with them? I put my recently acquired PJ set in a Jackenbacker, and it does boost clarity and presence a bit, but it's still surprisingly mid focused, I guess from the stock pre itself

What's your philosophy on strings? Same strings on all/most basses or different strings on all/most basses?

I voted different but to be fair I only have 3 basses with one being a fretless and the other 2 being in different tunings. If I had a lot of basses I might start using the same ones for multiple basses.

EMG TWX -> it's EMG CSX + JCSX

I think it'd be interesting they made a splittable pickup that goes from DC to J, but maybe that's not a feasible thing.

    D Standard Club (DGCF)

Finally gave 44-106 Pressurewounds a try and in D Standard. Tension feels right and and they have enough definition to sound good at low frequencies. We'll see how they age, but so far they seem to be great mid focused-strings. They don't really handle the occasional dip into drop C well...

I didn't want to buy 27 Jazz Bass pickups so I simulated them.

Honestly what I find most helpful for this is it really helps me in figuring out how I want to rewire some of my basses. The wiring scheme presented is pretty cool and I can even add switch capacitors or resistors to emulate cable loading or lower value pots even in active mode. Weirdly my...

P pickup in the real neck position?

The P pickup it Jackson CBXNT Deluxe is next the the neck, but it's a 24 feet neck. It sounds good, P like but more low mids and bass.

I didn't want to buy 27 Jazz Bass pickups so I simulated them.

Very interesting, looks like it's way thicker and hotter than most Jazz pickups, I guess kind of like the Jazz Bass version of a hot rails maybe. The Triad always seemed like and interesting bass, but I prefer an active buffer and it seems like it would make a big difference. I wonder if one...

I didn't want to buy 27 Jazz Bass pickups so I simulated them.

I mean I'd argue there is more to how pickups effect the sound than a a low pass resonant filter type effect anyway. This is all very helpful information, but it doesn't nessecarily cover.everything. Comb filtering in traditional dual coil humbuckers being one of the less controversial ones...

How many frets do you really need?

It depends on the number of strings and tuning. 4 strings E Standard 21 is ideal, 20 is doable. If I am doing D standard though at least 22 frets doesn't hurt for transposition for standard tuned songs. For a 5 or 6 string might as well go 24 frets and get some more range out of it.

I didn't want to buy 27 Jazz Bass pickups so I simulated them.

Very interesting information, especially with all the dimensions explored. My main bass has a model J and a preamp and definitely is kind of interesting to note that the pickups and a pre-amp pair well, though I am surprised it has such a high Q though. Mine has a 250k volume and blend though...

Review: GHS Pressurewounds ~ Tangy Not Twangy

Quick question that has been driving me crazy for a while but I remember browsing these forums at some point reading that the D strings in the pressure wounds are a single layer of cover wraps around the core? (At least some guages) Is this true or did I imagine reading it? Would be...

    Tapewound strings 5 string fretless

I haven't used la Bella black tapewounds but I have used their white golds and I have used D'addario black tapes. Bith are nice, I prefer my white golds as they are a bit brighter. That said however the D'daddarios are still bright than some other black tapes like rotossounds.

Nordstrand soapbar recommendations for fretless bass?

A toggle switch might be easier to dial in for sure, I mostly use EQ for broad/major tonal adjustments and have pedals/amps I can fine tune with. Really I am looking to do 3 types of sounds: A hifi full range sound A darker fatter sound A vocal mid focused sound As long as an EQ is flexible...

Nordstrand soapbar recommendations for fretless bass?

5ma power draw is a bit more than I'd want, even with a passive mode and the price is a bit steep, but if BTB-01 ever comes back in stock, it combined with their Mid Sweep seems like it would hit all the right frequencies for a fretless. In addition to some of the other options I have...

Nordstrand soapbar recommendations for fretless bass?

This is my line of thinking as well. The stock EMG BEQ64 has a 6k treble that just doesn't do all that much and I feel like a lower center frequency will probably to change the sound than anything I else could do on this bass.

Nordstrand soapbar recommendations for fretless bass?

Alright so thinking it over I got it narrowed down between Zen Blades or some combo of Big Blades. It just seems like it would be easier to sculpt their sound with a preamp than the others. Going to pair them with a new preamp too with frequencies more suited towards fretless (BQC or Tone...

PJ players, how often do you use the J pickup?

On my Jackenbacker the bridge solo'd or with just a big of P mixed in is my favorite On my Charvel, the J can sound a little dark on its own but not particularly thick so I am more likely to use 50/50 or P solo'd to add some treble

    Tuning to C-standard?

The low C kind of plays well with a lot of keyboards, I used drop C when playing with electronic bands for that reason, even if the keyboardist does a C I have an option to play a low note rather than having to play a root note C and octave above. Of course B standard plays well with other...

Nordstrand soapbar recommendations for fretless bass?

I've had a few swaps done before, but I've had a tech do them. Maybe mixing too different of pickups is playing with fire though. I was thinking warmer bridge brighter neck to better EQ for each solo position but maybe the opposite might make both on less scooped sounding. The videos help a lot...

Nordstrand soapbar recommendations for fretless bass?

Honestly I am wondering if a piezo might be a good addition as well, though cost and complexity need to be considered when I mod it. I do low how the low action tapes can give me mwah or clack depending on how I dig in and maybe a piezo would help. Perhaps the is the solution somewhat, though I...

Nordstrand soapbar recommendations for fretless bass?

So many options it's a bit overwhelming, but I think I can narrow it down by doing the mix and match. And maybe add some series/parallel/split types of options when doable. Some sort of Bartolini humbucker in the brjdge. It's mostly between an Original or Classic, Bartolini unless I want to try...

Nordstrand soapbar recommendations for fretless bass?

Thinking maybe a mix and match like Big Split Bridge and Zen Blade Neck or the somewhat commonly mentioned Big Split and Big Rig combo I'be heard mentioned in old thread. Or I could consider some bart classics, as having a bit more bass/low mids is good I just don't want the lows to mid out or...

Nordstrand soapbar recommendations for fretless bass?

Interesting two people so far have mentioned combining Nordstrands and Bartolini's. I hear split opinions on barts with some people saying they are muddy and other people saying they sound great on fretless. Are they intended to be wired series or parallel and how do they compare to say EMG...

Nordstrand soapbar recommendations for fretless bass?

The bass: fretless Schecter Stiletto Studio 4, with Gold White Tapewound strings. The goal: I find the stock 35HZs to be a bit dull and could prefer something clearer and more present sounding without sounding scooped or thin. My main considerations are some of the blade models. The big blades...

What makes the Jackenbacker (CBXNT DX) sound so Ric like for a PJ?

Ironically this came up in my notifications again right after I did a pickup swap. Switched the stock pickups to a Wilde P46/J45 set to add some more treble since they are supposed to be pretty hifi pickups. Put in some hi beams for strings. It still sounds very dark and mid heavy. I think I...

    Steel or Nickel strings?

Nickel by default, stainless if I have a bass I specifically want a more piano-like tones from. A super bright ringy bass sound can be cool but only for certain styles, I find the more toned down sound of nickels to be more versatile, esp if it's for more mids. I use activ basses so I can always...

Do you mostly play passive or active basses?

You still need to plug a cable from the bass into the tuner, I mean 0 cable capacitance. A buffer doesn't get rid of any capacitance that happens earlier in the chain and I have tested this with a normal length cable into a buffered pedal vs a 1ft cable straight into the amp. The latter was...
  35. Zazie Moondust

Do you mostly play passive or active basses?

Active, I don't like cable capacitance sucking my sound and I don't have to be d down to EQ that was. Preferably I like to have the ability to switch to passive though. The thing with active is you can still use a passive tone control or even e.ulate the cable capacitance if you want. You can...

    Nordstrand powerblade vs Dimarzo DP127

I'm pretty sure the DP127 is quad coil if I understand the description correctly. The Power Blade seems like it's probably more similar to a Model P but with a blade instead of adjustable pole pieces, they sound kind of in similarish territory based on YouTube clips anyway.

Sounds like it might be worth taking the risk. Its way more hifi sounding than DiMarzio Areas of EMG GZRs from comparison clips on YouTube and Aguilar's, Nordstrands, etc. are $100+ more dollars. A bit of filing worst case shouldn't be that bad.

I am looking to put a P46/J45 set in my bass, but looking at the dimensions of these pickups they seem longer than the typical P and J measurements. I know there seems to be a little bit of extra space in the route, but I am not sure if it's enough extra space for them to fit. I think I've seen...

Steve Bailey on flats vs rounds on a Fretless

Currently I use Gold White Tapes, gives me some mwah if I want it and upright-esque sound if I want. Even has a bit of black with how low I have the action. Not sure if it's the optimal string, but the fact that it is gentle on the board (I slap in it sometimes) and matches the gold hardware is...
