007: Quantum of Solace

I'd be interested to see you guys respond to Ebert's review of the film:

I have to say, I quite enjoyed his review! I didn't agree with it, but it brought many laughs!

especially this paragraph:

The chase has no connection to the rest of plot, which is routine for Bond, but it's about the movie's last bow to tradition. In "Quantum of Solace" he will share no cozy quality time with the Bond girl (Olga Kurylenko). We fondly remember the immortal names of Pussy Galore, Xenia Onatopp and Plenty O'Toole, who I have always suspected was a drag queen. In this film, who do we get? Are you ready for this? Camille. That's it. Camille. Not even Camille Squeal. Or Cammy Miami. Or Miss O'Toole's friend Cam Shaft.

lol... cam shaft. :p

The new Bond films have gone too far off course of how the franchise was back in the Sean Connery days. They have far too much action in the new movies. If you notice in the old ones, there's less action and more of everything else.
Craig as the new Bond isn't really appealing to me. I don't really think that he has the look of Bond. Connery definetly did and so did Brosnan.

I believe the movie was great. But don't get me wrong, I do agree the camera during the car chase wasn't that great but it wasn't terrible. I did miss the "The name is Bond, James Bond" and the fact that Bond does not bang the other chick, but then again, the movie is set after Casino Royal, which was the first novel. So it made sense that Bond was a lot colder and about revenge. It made sense that he did not use "Bond, James Bond." Indeed Casino Royal was better. Although what disappointed was the fight with Dominique. In other movies the fight lasts so long and is entertaining and while it was happening in Quantum I thought it was just "another fight."

But it was a great movie IMO :)

I agree with crispygoat, people are forgetting that it is actually supposed to be one of the first few things that bond has done in the service as a 00 agent, casino royale isn't his 20th-odd outing, it was his first and he hasn't had enough time to produce some smooth-talking gentleman yet he is still a cold hard brute that still lets his emotions get in the way of his job.

Remember this is only his second mission :p

I just saw this today, and I must say, I was very dissappointed. I really liked Casino Royale, but this one wasn't anywhere close to the standard the set in the previous movie.

I could tell something was wrong as soon as the credits started rolling - the theme song with Jack White and Alicia Keys just plain sucked, and the credits montage was boring and uninspired. The movie never really picked up from there.

In Casino Royale, there was plot development, intrigue, and most importantly - pacing. This one is just one giant chase / fight scene, over and over again. Of it's entire run time, I think only 5 minutes was devoted to any kind of dialogue, so there was absolutely no plot to hang the action on. It amazed me that a movie with so much action could have been so boring.

My sexy doctor lady girlfriend almost fell asleep during the movie - I would have too, but I kept waiting for the film to redeem itself at some point. It didn't.

Have you ever read the Bond books? He was/is a government assassin, period. His reason for assignment is to kill someone. he had a veneer of civilization, but never doubted what his primary mission was.

I was prepared to dislike Dan Craig - I just could NOT imagine a short blonde guy as bond. It went against the character Fleming wrote. But Craig really surprised me, because of the characterization he brought out. He made Bond gritty and a bit more nasty than any of his predecessors. Let's face it, Bond is not a nice man...and he can't be in his line of work.

Exactly. Although not entirely faithful to the book, the movie did do the book justice because of Bond's portrayal. In the book he is gritty and not a nice man at all. In fact he really doesn't have any respect for common day people. he views them as mundance people leading mundane lives. It wasn't until Flemming's short story Quantum of Solace, which has very little bond, where he actually listens to stories about their lives and gains a modicum of respect.

This is why I loved Casino Royale so much. The elegance was gone and replaced with a guy who is still just a man. Really good at what he does but not heroic. As well the gadgets weren't front and centre.

Don't get me wrong. I really enjoyed a lot of the older movies, but for different reasons. Craig really captured Flemming's Bond in Royale.

The only thing that I was irritated by was they replaced baccarat with poker. But hey, you gotta get with the times and it would have been hard to introduce the game to the audience without the long diatribe in the book.
