1/4" to Neutrik Connection Hack: Questions

I think that the larger EX cabs probably have Speakon (EX112, 210, 215, etc), but this may be a slightly older version. I did buy it used. I took out the 1/4" port to see what was on the back and it looks pretty easy to simply replace with a Speakon port.

We'll see! If there's soldering, it's a no-go for me. I'll have to defer to a pro.

The Speakons I bought had spade connectors on the back. You crimp the appropriately-sized terminal ends on the internal speaker wire and slide into place. It's a friction fit, no soldering. Here's the same thing installed on pseudo patch bay.

The question is: will you have to modify the enclosure chassis to accept the Speakon?

Note that the push-on connections are the uncommon .187" style, .205" will also work ok but the .250" which is much more common but too wide and can lead to shorting between terminals.

In retrospect, I suppose I should have bought the 8 ohm version [edit: since I intended to pair it with another cab for higher-volume gigs], but since I bought it used for a good price, I don't feel too bad. It's a perfect jazz rig for me, and exactly what I'm looking for.

If you buy another 4 ohm cab you can run daisy chain them with a series cable to make an 8 ohm load. Then you could buy two more of the same cabs and run both pairs in parallel to get back to 4 ohms. You would have the ultimate modular rig :bassist:

Perhaps, but it would probably be the most unfriendly modular rig to hook up...

Unfortunately this cab doesn't have an output to run into another cab. It'd be perfect if it did, since 2x10s is pretty much all I'll ever need until I run into house sound. No go on this little cab.

Not at all, you would just need to make up a series cable for each pair. It would be no more difficult than hooking up two cabs.

[Neutrik Speakon] makes one with screw-locking tension ports now, much like the cable connectors. Product code nl4mp-st. I've just ordered a 2-pack.

Good show! My needs were a little different as you can tell by the photo. Strip the wire ends, lock 'em down, and you're good to go. I hate to fire up my soldering iron needlessly.

Thanks for the tip! I got mine on eBay for $4 or so each. Shipping was cheaper than elsewhere.

Unfortunately I don't have a soldering iron or any other related paraphernalia. I feel like that's a dividing line where I'll just leave it to the pros... for now. ;)

No, this cable is wired in series so two 4 ohm cabs would have 8 ohms of resistance at the amp. Attached is a crude drawing of how the cable is wired.

You would have to make your own, but its pretty easy. I didn't make that particular cable, I just posted it from a different thread.

I just now saw the diagram you attached. That's really helpful! I'll have to do some research on cable building and how to sheath them, but I'm excited that it's not a lost cause to use this cab with another!

Just to be sure - the positive and negative cables are essentially the same composition and are only differentiated by what they connect to at either end, right? That's why you can attach the negative end on one Y cable to the positive end on the other (from cab-to-cab)?

Think of it as a one way street, the signal voltage goes through both coils returns through the negative side of the second speaker. So both speakers are acting like a single speaker.
