Aren't you concerned that CA will let the neck flex excessively? Or more precisely, that string tension will mess with the CA?

OK gotcha.
What about lines made of the same wood as the fretboard? I would think filling with CA would be a bit of a PITA. But maybe i'm dead wrong lol.
Nice tiger maple BTW. I'm a sucker for a nice tiger maple.

I have used CA in several builds an not experienced any issues so far. Anything you fill the slots with will be of a different density, or react to compression and contraction differently.
Filling with CA is pretty easy, and I like the 3D like depth and transparency you can see when you look at the fret line close up. The maple was from a local hardwood supplier (Austin Hardwoods) - it's not 5A by any means, but it's decent looking and was fairly inexpensive. I recently got some 5A wood that cost significantly more, but the figure on that piece is beyond gorgeous.

I started filling fret lines, but have been pulled into the preparations my lovely wife and children have in the works for them going out of town on Monday. I am taking a few days off next week so I can spend my days in the shop finishing up these basses while listening to a marathon of dark fantasy audio books. "Nifft the Lean" will be the soundtrack for the final stages of this bass build.

I am going to have to drop these two basses out of the $100 build challenge as I am not going to get them done by the deadline, but I will keep updating things here as progress is made.

June 30, is impossible for me, sorry. End of August might be fine. I'll finish my Ripper Shorty anyway, no matter if there is a challenge or not.

That helps quite a bit. I am hoping I can meet that deadline, which leads me to discuss the design change I am making on these basses.
The piano pin tuner design works very well for my purposes, but the kids really need a system that does not have a tuning wrench to lose. I am going to use some of the prototype single string headless tuners I am designing, and equip them with thumb screws large enough for my kids to be able to employ them. This allows me to test my prototypes under the rigor my children are certain to deliver, and the kids get basses that are easier to tune.
As the prototypes will cost me nothing, this does not add any cost to the design.

Here's the tuner design I think will fit this build the best. The thumb screw is wide enough to get a decent grip on for the kids, and it should look decent on the bass.

Recently my personal life has become hectic, and free time has been at a premium. The unfortunate fact that I have been moved into a role where working nights on a regular basis is necessary has made it difficult to keep up with my bass builds. It's a season, and it will pass, but everything not labeled "essential" has slowed down "because life". This build will continue, but updates may be sparse until things reach an equilibrium. I am aiming for completing these by Christmas.
