So the birdseye maple is out for this build. While trimming up the edges with the router the piece got away from me and gave me a classic fan tearout...and I was SOOOO close to a damn near perfect trim. I did a quick pass with the 3/4" roundover bit to see if it's salvageable. It's not. I am going to have to plane back the top and do the top again - more than likely in hickory. I still have the stouter body shape I can use with the birdseye blank I made previously. I haven't decided what to do yet, and I feel sick with sadness.

Let this inspire you. Go with it carry on that deep rout and see if it artistically is pleasing in the end.

Thanks so much for the kudos! My Latin is nonexistent, and I fall into the camp of people who like to name things and Latin is very cool sounding. I am sure those who know Latin look at my pathetic attempts and just shake their heads. ;) I love the Monty Python reference!

Last night in that hazy place between waking and slumber I had a vision fueled by my desire to make this bass an aggressive sounding four banger. The walnut fingerboard is going to get chewed up by the rounds I plan on stringing him with, so I am going to go with a hickory fingerboard. I want the nucifera to be a bringer of nuts....as in it rips them right off you and scampers around with them taunting you like a psychotic squirrel. I just need to see if I can find a squirrel skull inlay that will fit in the budget....

I know the place well...
That's also the place where Tinkerbell and Peter Panning hook up for their post adventure trysts.... But that's beside the point....
Um...I'm not sure I had a point.
It seems there's something missing from the last picture you posted, I can't quite put my finger on it....

It was out of the shot on the other side of the table saw. ;)

I did a quick sanity check on the costs, and after adding the skull to the shopping list the total cost of the project is a bit shy of $70. I have enough in budget to pick up some squirrel bones as fret lines if I so desired. ;)

I found Invalid Link Removed skull on Etsy that should work perfect.

Tonight a truss rod channel was routed, and the fingerboard was installed. The hickory is lovely wood, and the neck is just stunning from a grain perspective - the picture does not do the grain justice on either piece of wood.

In an earlier post I alluded to changing this build to a 4 string, and in the interest in correcting a mistype know that this is destined to be a 5 string, but know that I am changing the scale length from 32" to 30". This is going to be fun!

That does look to be a darn puurty piece of hickory from what I can see.
Most of the hickory I have is predominantly straight-ish grain and as such, rather boring...but still pretty with color ranging from light blonde to amber and even dark brown accent streaking.
Looks like you got all that AND some nice swoopy grain movement... Cool!

I really love the looks of hickory in general, but agree that this piece has some lovely color variation. I have been wanting to use hickory as a fingerboard material for months and am glad for the opportunity to do so. I am wondering how well this stuff will hold up to the round wounds as I am not planning on using epoxy or CA as a coating.
