15" Speakers to pair with SUNN 2000S

Hello all, first post here.

I putting together a bass rig for the band, but since I'm not the bass player I wasn't looking to spend much money. I tried some low cost modern stuff like Acoustic and also tried the SUNN Concert Bass (first early version without the red knobs) and they just weren't loud enough.

Anyway, I found a SUNN 2000S locally for $750 and I'm very pleased. Was more than I was looking to spend but I knew I would probably like the 2000S and could stop searching.

Anyway, now that that story is told. :) Right now we are using it through a 2x15 tower PA speaker with a horn rated at 4 ohms.

I have an old tuck n' roll Kustom 2x15 cab (tall one with the two silver ports) that is empty. It originally had those original JBL D140 speakers in it...but I blew those out years ago.

Looking for suggestions on BASS Guitar speakers to put in that Kustom 2x15 that would pair nicely with the SUNN 2000S. Here are my concerns:

Not too Expensive, about $300 for the pair.
Rated at 4 ohms each so I can wire them together for 8 ohms
High enough wattage so I won't blow them with the 2000S
Lots of low end...but good for metal. We play a style of doom sometimes faster and more akin to metal

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Well you have to decide how fit you are, that is as to weather you want to lug Ceramic or be one of those neo nancy boys.:D
You might find a nice second hand pair of EVM 15L's if you don't mind heaving stuff about.:bassist:

It's only a box with some holes in it for flecks sake! At celestion we used to drill holes and randomly block them to see what worked best, we even put salt on the cones to watch port interaction before those Australian chaps took the art out of it and put the maths together:spit: and now everybody can be a cabinet designer all they need is a computer and a tape measure.:bassist:

I prefer the art to the numbers, personally. So we're in agreement.

My favorite home speakers are some old KLH bookshelf speakers. Or maybe some ancient telefunken towers that came with an early solid state radio hifi I have. I mean, they're ALIVE. Seriously.

But I don't think this chap wants to swap out drivers over and over again and change port sizes...

My one experience trying to replace a driver in a 110 was disappointing. Maybe a big 215 is less finicky.

Thanks for all the suggestions,

Yup not really looking to swap out and try lots of speakers. I've gone through that with guitar...months of buying and selling speakers...playing through two identical 1x12s with ABY switches.

Glad I did that, but at the moment I want to work with the budget and get something rather quick. I gotta free up that PA speaker :)

I was thinking and researching Eminence's current stuff and had some others mention them as well.

I did notice I liked the guitar speakers I tried that had higher efficiency/sensitivity ratings most. The ones I decided on are 99db.

What range is considered a high rating for 15" bass guitar speakers?

I had the good fortune to occasionally borrow a Sunn 2000-S cabinet for gigs, and used it in conjunction with my old- screw on dolly square SVT cabinet and '69 head. It sounded great. It had factory equipped JBL- D-140F speakers.
I also owned a 200-S cabinet with JBL K-140's.
The 2000-S cabinet is considerably larger. If you're not going to dime everything, a pair of vintage D-140's would be killer. If you are going to push it hard, a couple of modern high wattage Eminence Delta's or Kappa's might work great.
I have a great vintage Sunn 2-15 SH curved front, folded horn cabinet now, with Eminence Delta LF's, and it's a 4 ohm, 900 watt cab. I can't wait to get the Genz Benz Shuttle 9.0 I just bought...900 watts at 4 ohms!
Eminence speakers can be found new at very reasonable prices.

i would not run a series load on a tube amp, unless its paired with another parallel load. Or another series cabinet. so if a speaker blows there will still be a load present.

Hiwatt was really smart they had switches on there 2x15 cabinets.
you can run a switch on the cabinets, so one position will be a 4ohm load in parallel, and the other position will be a 16ohm in series.

So if you need to run more than one cabinet and reach the limit of your amp output taps. You can run 2 series 16 ohm cabinets for a 8ohm load, or run just one cabinet at 4ohms.
