I had been using a Mackie SRM150 for small gigs and rehearsals as well as a personal monitor when there was a larger sound system at my gigs, but the 5 in speaker was not cutting it. The speaker would break up and crap out if I turned the unit up over 60% or so, so I took matters into my own hands!
My plan was to make the smallest lightest most durable box I could. Here are the results:
Nothing overly flashy, the front and back baffle are 3/8 ply and the sides top and bottom are 1/4 ply. The recess for the controls wasn't photographed well, but I cut the part that holds it out of the original 150 and made some rails to screw it into on the inside of the top.
Once everything was glued and I put in a few braces to add rigidity, I used Herculiner inside and out to make a shell and reduce the resonance of the box without having a lot of bracing which would just add weight.
So far, 3 months in, I've used it probably on 20 or so gigs and I'm loving it for the upright. I use a DPA 4099 mic which doesn't hurt
That's really the impetus of this box, I needed a phantom power enabled powered speaker basically and until qsc makes a q8 with phantom power this baby is just what I needed!
